Gearbox/diff oil change

Have just had the differential oil changed and at the same time they did the gear box. Nothing major but at the moment there is a very small amount of oil under the gearbox and a little on my drive.
Only happens when I arrive home then a couple of drips on the floor then stops.

Could the garage have over filled the gearbox.

Possibly just a little run off oil running down the side of the gear box.When it was filled up,but i would have expected the garage to have wiped any excess off.Also could be the sump plug is loose

I hope they used the correct oil in them, MUST!! be GL4 oil in the gearbox and LSD in the diff

Gearbox sump plug

Is the plug easy to get out without jacking up.

Plenty of room, no need to jack up, use the end of a 1/2 inch socket wrench, always undo level plug first, just in case you can't later.
You normally fill to the level plug via the level plug, so not easy to overfill.

wipe it all off to start with, level check is easy, just remove the filler/level plug on the off side with a half inch drive knuckle bar, should come out easy as been out recently, vehicle level oil should just dribble out or if you put your finger inis oil should be at the bottom of the hole, the drain plug might not be tight enough if the oil is dripping from here, if so tighten it some more, Rick

I always apply a little "Calor tite" it is similar to red hematite, never sets, fills the threads so water can't get into the threads and cause corrosion.

Very easy to undo, wipes off with meths.
Also you don't have to over tighten it to prevent leaks.

I use it on the sump too. I don't replace the copper washer either.
The only thing that is tight is me...:lol:lol

Never leaked in 18 years I have been doing this.:thumb2
Also used it on the Diff, and transfer box:thumbs.

it's been said but make sure they used the right oils. GL5 will kill your gear box no matter what the garage says! it has a strong sulfur smell that usually gives it way - sniff your drips :thumb2

Hi, when you say GL4. what grade would that be ??? Sorry to but in :thumbs
