Hi all
Have been on a 200 mile round trip with horsebox on the back of my Maverick 2.7td today. As we arrived at our destination the gearstick suddenly went really slack and finding the gears became really difficult. We got home and i have stripped down interior to reveal the top of the gearbox.
Is there a ball joint with springs or something similar beneath the rubber boot?
Can i repair this at home as im low on funds currently?

Many thanks for any advice
Jeremy

What is beyond the ball joint as the gear stick feels like its moving in a ball joint but is really slack beyond. I suppose i should pull the rubber boot off and have a look.

Have removed rubber boot. Ball joint doesnt seem to worn and mav has only done 105k. There is some vertical play in the stick and as i say it is really slack.

I pressume there is a spring beneath that holds the gearstick in neutral?

there is springs, only problem is its buried right inside the box, but when its in a gear, the gears themselves hold the lever, the only springs are the ones that hold it in neutral, when you move the lever side to side is that when it feels slack? is there a lot of play in the stick when its in gear?:nenau

On the end of the gearstick should be a nylon or something like nylon bush i suspect yours has worn away and fallen off replace this and you should be fine

As people have already advised your description sounds like the nylon bush on the end of the gearstick has fallen off assuming the gearbox is similar to the later units. Easy fix once you have the correct part.

See the procedure I wrote a year or so ago correct link is shown from 97terrano above.

Thanks guys

Yes nylon bush had dropped off but oddly it was the ball on the gearstick that was worn so a new bush would not solve this one.
Went to the breakers and removed gearstick from a maverick with the nylon bush firmly attached on the end.

Mav back on the road again hard at work moving our rare breed british lop pigs about.

96 Terrano, where abouts in Dumfries are you.

I live in Rockcliffe just below the border, if you ever fancy some rare breed pork just call buy cheers

When I replaced my nylon bush the old one was very easy to fit and remove but felt loose on the ball. The new bush was a very, very tight fit and I had to use a light hammer to seat the ball.
It would be very suprising if the steel ball had warn in preference to the nylon bush as the steel is very much harder. But to prove this you would need to purchase a new nylon bush.

what scrappy did you go too? AS i need a few parts for my terrano:augie

I went to Douglas's Scrapyard just outside carlisle, but there was only one mav and 2 very old terrano so would not bother for a while.

No probs. There's about 2 scrappys up here A large one. That's got over 80 vehicles a smaller one. Probably about 30 vehicles and a metal recycleing centre. They charge the best for scrap But you cant get stuff from it:doh. Ohh aye, and there's my back yard lol. Had 2 terranos on my drive but council told me to shift one. As it was an eyesore:eek: more like eye candy:lol
