Hi all I have tonight got me another T2 (98 TDI) and although I bought it to break for spares the fella I got it from was clueless. He reckons that it was losing power and cutting out once the revs were let off (all the usual signs of MAF failure) even though the car was still running and no MIl light on. So he listens to a back street garage and proceeds to buy another fuel pump from a breakers and now wonders why it wont run and cant even get fuel to the injector pipes!!! So can you answer these questions.

1. Are the diesel pumps coded?
2. Can they be coded from another car?

I do have the original pump so wouyld it be worth me refitting it and seeing if the car will breath again?

The pumps on the TDI are not coded to the ecu or immobiliser; as long as you fit the correct pump i.e. Bosch to Bosch VP37with the correct part number matching the original pump from a terrano (as these pumps were use on many other makes being set up differently). Or Zexel to Zexel, it will be ok.
Fitting and timing the pump correctly is essential and will require a dti with an adapter to fit in to the rear of the pump to get the timing spot on especially if it has been messed with.

Whats a dti ?

when I put my pump back on I timed it up without any special tools just by lining the marks up.

I only ask a a local diesel company claim they are coded along with the ecu and key.

dti = dial test indicator

To get the timing spot on you will need one and follow the workshop manual as to measuring the piston lift in the pump. Although lining up the mark will get it running in most cases, but you can not be sure its spot on and therefore the ecu may be altering the timing incorrectly.

The VP37 pump does not have its own processor so can not be coded, they are an electrically controlled version of the old VE pump, the later Bosch VP30 & VP44 do and can be coded well the 44 can but these are not fitted to the 2.7tdi

I have changed a couple including my own so can speak from experience

Ok I got the dti for pump now all I nedd is a downloadable manual to explain the settings of the pump

cant find the part i need but then to be honest i ant sure what i am really looking for
