after finding some of my svo gelling in the shed dispite mixing petrol with it iv been looking at pre heaters this one seems well made and the guy has good feed back

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WVO-Diese...374?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item416fd32366

is any one else using a pre heater or not bothering i know its usually more of a problem with the fuel in the tank gelling up and after a short while the hot returned fuel from the pump warms it up nicely.

so

whats people thoughts ?

Was doing a bit of digging the other evening and found Zip's thread on fitting a heat exchanger and there was also reference to the TD models having a heated fuel filter.

Now I have a late model TD and I haven't noticed a heater in there - has anyone got a photo of what this is like? Am I maybe just blind and missed it?

Zip, how's the heat exchanger working out as I'm wondering about doing this for mine too.

the original heated fuel filter does seem the best way togo if needed, me and zippy had a chat and i think im not gonna bother unless one drops in my lap :) my tdi dont have one and as you say nor do late td models.

zippy did say the warmer fuel burns better so still up for disscusion but the point was well made they would all still be starting on cold fuel from the pump and fuel lines so heating before the fliter or any where else wont help the cold start.

Ours starts purfectly well and after a while anyways the returned fuel from the leak off which is nice and warm is mixing in the tank warming it all up.

maybe thats why nissan dropped it they decided it wasnt needed so far i think 50/50 svo pump diesel in very cold conditions seems to be the best solution

experiment time

so just because im off work after a knee opp and its been snowing so no one wants to learn to ride a motor bike i have been looking into making a diesel fuel heater me and zippy chatted about the merits of them.

well this is what iv bought

its a tiny little thing and over the next couple of days im going to Wire it up and connect it just before the fuel pump, a proper little experiment il measure the fuel temp before and after the heater and internal fuel temp in the filter and report back.

these little heaters are only £35 new and if bmw think a diesel car needs them when its cold thats good enuf for me lol damm i need to get back to work and soon :doh

this is the coolant heat exchanger small enough to fit under main fuel filterhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/plate-HEAT-EXCHANGER-biofuel-veg-vegetable-cooking-oil-SVO-WVO-biodiesel-Pol-UCO-/261153312495?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3ccdf34eef:thumbs

make sure u lag the heat exchange and the pipes going to the fuel pump from the filter with normal household pipe lagging to keep the fuel as warm as poss and get the proper lagging that goes roung the fuel filter will get link up in a mo

this is the link for the type of fuel filter i use and as it wraps around the fuel filter it heats up a the fuel really well but u do need a small coolant heat exchanger to help to heres the ebay link for the 12v fuel filter heater i did not pay that much but it the same type:thumbs

thanks for that but am one step ahead looking around the garage i found a set of wrap round heated bike grips am gonna wrap them around the fuel filter connected to my nice new wireing i made for other bit of ebay junk. il measure the fuel temp before and after and report back
