Hi all, a rather embarrassing day today....

I was driving along and the truck seemed to stutter a little, then eventually stopped, i looked at the fuel gauge and it was on the red but the light wasn't lit.

So I guessed it had run out of fuel, called my brother to bring me some fuel, i put it in and it wouldn't start....ended up calling the AA and the man tried to start it and said it had air stuck in the fuel rail so he loosened an injector and it started....so good result...

However, is there anyway i can check the fuel light?
I was sure it used to flash on when the ignition was switched on, but now it doesn't.
Where is the best place to start to fix the light?

Any help or advice is much appreciated

cheers
stephen

I'd like to have my little light back too  Mine used to work and I reckoned on a good 25 miles from when it went on. I got caught out exactly the same way as you :doh but I didn't need Mr AA :D

there is a float switch in the tank, if bulb and wiring ok then this is next to check, Rick

If the low fuel lamp works on start up, and the low level fuel doesn't,
then as Rick suggests, it could be the "Switch/Float"
Maybe it can't drop to the lower height position, may be due to a build up of Crud or even diesel bug.

Has you fuel filter shown signs of gel like contamination?

It could also be the connector at the tank.
Access through the rear of the car under the carpet.

Or carry a spare can of diesel in the boot, and the tools required to bleed the air.

Or better still, never let it drop below a quarter tank.

Where's the fun in that ? :sly

You never know when you might be called to go off road, or even called out to a member of the family at 3 am, and there are no fuel stations open.

We always have enough fuel in at least one car to get us to the family furthest away in one trip without having to stop to search for fuel.

Worth thinking about....

Agreed but then I've several other cars to choose from. The wife's is the only reliable one and I get to keep that with loads of go juice in it :thumb2
Good tip though mate

I remember having to go down the M6 Toll road on the day it opened in the Mav at 1:00 am on a family emergency, so we now always keep a good tank.

The Toll road people gave me a certificate as one of the first to use it....
