just changed the diesel filter. there's a black plastic rectangular part on top held down by 4x8mm head bolts. Gasket underneath, plastic part fits into filter housing. mine looks like it has been dragged down the road, maybe from particles in the fuel passing it ? there are two electrical connections on top and I can see a metal part inside the housing, but it wasn't connected to anything.
Anyone know what it is ? I bet someone does.

Ideal place to put a little "bio-deisel" fuel heater I reckon :augie

Right, I'm off to change the oil, I expect an answer by the time I get back.
:thumbs

Nah, mines nothing like that. Well it might be, I can only see filters in your photos :augie.

Where do the wires go to Adz ? Mine looks shagged inside, probably best to source a replacement complete with wires .... Have you ever had yours off ? Does it looked like it's been filed down with a rock ?

In the 1st picky
Just to the right of my add on x2 in-line filters
You will see the heater (to the left of the primer)
& mine was fine after cleaning :thumbs

Cheers Adz - exactly like yours ;).
Fancy me thinking a heater could go there.......Are they on all the time or only when they need to be ?
I changed the oil and dropped the sump plug, which went in the filler hole of the catch pan and blocked it. While I was trying to find the sump plug, my oil was happily pouring all over the drive way !
Only need to do an oil change in the middle of the drive now, and it'll all be the same colour. :doh
How much oil do these beasties take anyway ? Put 5 litres in and it still wants more .

I asume its on all the time as it would be pointless to act like a glow plug :nenau

About 6 / 6.5 ltrs i think

Off the top of my head without clicking the link :augie

S'ok, found it . http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/downloads/workshop/wk23.pdf.

6.25 litres !!!!

this site's awesome.

Following the gulf of mexico incident and having broken a bone in my thumb taking the oil filter off I gave up for the day. :banghead

The moral of the filter change story is to make sure you have a filter wrench :thumbs

Also have a proper 15 litre oil catch tray or cut a 25 litre square tub in half & use the 1/2 with the lid still attached so you can pour it into a tub to dispose of :thumbs

If your not very good at moving your hand out of the way & or holding onto the sump plug  when you pour the waste oil into your disposal tub, use a thin necked funnel to catch it or use mesh :thumbs

Hope ya thumbs better soon  :clap :augie :lol

go to a SECOND HAND SHOP for a new thumb :augie:lol:lol

:lol

Anyone know where the wiring on the heater connects to ? Can't find it in the manual, it shows the later type of filter. Also does anyone know it's automatic, or can it be switched on and off manually ? The wiring has been cut off mine so I'm guessing there's something wrong with it or the circuit and that I may have to make a little loom for it.

Or I could just buy one of these off ebay.....
