Posted a bit back about roof bars and their effect on economy.

Opinions ranged from a bizzare " no effect " trough to some good advice.

Well I reckon they make a hell of a difference.

I often do the round trip from home to Newcastle , 80 miles. Conditions similar, temp similar, progress similar etc etc I know theres a lot of variables if youre being scientific but...................

Previously with no roof bars, cruise set to 65 no harsh braking got an easy 32mpg.

Last two trips with bars fitted. A measly 28 and 29mpg average.

Just got back half an hour ago 31 mpg no effort. No roof bars, took em off today.

Clear pattern there, 3 mpg difference on a truck that gets around 30mpg. Thats 10% difference !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lot of dosh.

that is significant, have you done anything else differently? like changed the brad of diesel, more or less luggage in the boot?

no not a thing different. In fact after a tidy out, a dog proofing session and a full tank of fuel the weight may actually be a bit up today if not the same.

The diesel is tescos as always. Tyres same pressure by the same guage. Im pretty amazed tbh.

I have actually seen posted elsewhere opinions that roof racks can impact severely as in lots of mpg. Never seen much on the roof bars though.

Jeep reckon these ones are "aerodynamic" however i could often hear te wind whistling through them so they must have been affecting the airflow.

I'll be honest Id rather not work if I dont have to BUT I'd probably veg if I didnt being a very young potential retiree :D
