Front wheel bearings

I had time at the garage last weekend to do the front wheel alignment. A complete waste of time it was, front wheel bearings have to much play...
I have read a few threads on the forum regarding this and I haven't got it completely clear on how to do it!
Can somebody shine some light on it for me?

Now when you get to the ring with the two screws in, remove the two screws, and the ring.

You will see a ring with a series of holes in, turn this clock wise, you could use a couple of blunted nails in opposing holes with a bar between them, until the slack in the bearing is taken out, don't overdo it. replace the outer ring adjust to align the two posidrive screws.
Then reassemble..

Half hour job, after jacking up....

Edit... if you have fixed hubs, you will need to remove outer hub cover...
someone will advise on how to do that, the download and my experience is on auto hubs.

Those fixed hub caps are seized solid!!!!! You wont get them off without damaging them!!!! I wasn't bothered as they weren't going back on as I have my Manuals fitted now

Nobody wants to end up like Banshee...

Very good Rustic, but these are taper roller bearings they MUST HAVE A PRE LOAD, this means take out the slack then a further quarter turn to provide the pre-load if the lock screws do not line up then back off slightly till they do, the fact that so many people have to keep readjusting the front bearings is because they do not give this pre-load and the inner race spins wearing the nut in the process which then makes the problem worse, if you think about how a tapper bearing works you will see if it is slack then only the bottom four or five rollers will be working, on a properly pre- loaded bearing all rollers will be sharing the load, no criticism mate just being informative to add to your already bulging wealth of knowledge, Rick

I think you are right Rick, when I did them first, I read the manual, and it said the preload can be done using a spring balance to see if you can rotate the hub.
