Hello peeps,
Recently had a noise coming from underneath the car, anyway had the car in workshop today squeaking noise seems to be coming from the front prop. With both front wheels jacked up it is noisy from the transfer box end. Now is there servicable parts in there? When spinning the front wheels I noticed the front prop turning even though 2wd was engaged is this normal it is a 3.0 with auto front hubs. I would have thought this would only turn when 4wd is engaged:nenau

Thanks for any replies Colin :)

Pretty sure some if not all later models were fitted with fixed front hubs.
Yours reads like that is the case so turning the wheels whilst jacked up would cause the front prop to turn...but only as far as the Transfer box is concerned.
This would still happen when driving in 2WD mode...drive would only go to front wheels once 4WD was selected in cab to engage the transfer box.

Not sure why your prop squeaks tho, but chances are it's the constant turning via fixed hubs that will contribute to wearing of parts.

If it's defo auto hubs then one or both is goosed and not unlocking. Strip down clean and regrease may well be all that's needed.
Have you checked the T/B oil level and the front diff for that matter ?

At the risk of sounding stupid how do tell if the hubs are fixed or auto:nenau

Post pic on here eaiest way.Auto usually have auto written on them unless the sticker has fallen off:doh

The front prop shaft on the later models with fixed front hubs, don't have grease nipples on the UJ's or sliding joint.

My 1995 Mav with auto hubs does, and when you think about it, the later models need them more as the gear is always rotating.

Anyway, Nissan saved a few quid by doing this, now it's your problem.:doh:doh

Mine, which are now 18 years old are still the originals.

I think you could be replacing the UJ's , first check how much play you have, and maybe find a way of greasing the sliding joint too.

Hope this helps,

best regards,
Rustic

Thanks for all the replies, the plastic centre caps just have Nissan on them:nenau
