had a ticking noise coming from nearside front hub stripped it down and found two small pieces of metal loose looks like they have broken off of the ring that holds the spring in can you buy this ring or do i have to get a new hub

Sounds like it could be the brake rings, are they a sort of brassy colour. You can buy them, about £35 I believe but many people opt to swap for manual hubs instead. I was speaking to someone on Sunday when out green laning and his 95N Maverick has had fixed hubs drive plates from a late model 3.0 Terrano fitted. The thing is some people think the autos are too much trouble, other people go for ever without ever having trouble with them.

hi there not brass in colour they are silver and the ring has a pattern on its edge

ive manuals on mine means i have to get of me fat backside and turn dials much prefer autos laziness eh!

When I know that I am likely to need 4wd I lock my hubs before I set off and then simply slip in and out of 4wd as needed.

My auto's started ticking and even over heated so I had enough of those ages ago.

Is it just the later 3L that had the fixed hubs or did the 2.7's have them aswell :? My hubs seem ok at the min but if they do go & need changing I like the idea of the fixed hubs as you don't have to get out & lock them, plus you will stay clean

if im darting between jobs say 5 miles apart i could just leave them engaged and shift to 2wd in cab doing no harm? i can live with drop in mpg!

Thats what I do when I'm green laning etc, I never consciously unlock them, you alway reverse up soon enough so I just go back to 2wd and let them dissengage next time I do reverse.

This technique I use in the winter as well, coming from icy side roads to clear main roads.
Saves frightening the guy behind you as you reverse a metre towards him to disengage front auto hubs.. 8O 8O 8O 8O

Just a reminder for anyone unsure.
