I am actually wondering why the car should have a front differential at all. While driving on road, you mostly won't need 4WD so front weels will spin freely- the front diff will not be in function. While off road and using 4WD, you will want to lock the front (and rear) differential for best traction. So after all, why do we have the front differential? If I can not find a good reason, I will end up in locking it permanently by welding it together. I am curious for your ideas?

If you engage 4 wheel drive on normal road conditions you will cause windup & will not be going anywhere fast before buggering something up.

Steering is very usefull I think :D
Weld it and ruin your off road ability and you'll need arms like Popeye. Side slopes disaster

makeitfit hits the nail on the head, I welded my off roader front diff, great for traction, but just not the direction I wanted to go, now got a Lokka and fixed hubs, the bees knees, Rick

The later versions have fixed hubs, so front diff is running all the time, a welded diff under these circumstances would be game over, especially on wet surfaces, on a dry road, as said, no steering at all.

If you continued with locked diff, the front tyres would be fighting each other and you will have shreaded tyres very quickly.

A lokka is the way to go.
There is s write up on the site on how to install.

Try here.

So a Lokka on a road motor will need manual free wheeling hubs.

Blocky, if yours is like mine on 17"s will need new rims of say 16" to allow
for the selective hubs.

No you'll work fine with fixed hubs. As long as you're not in 4wd the Lokka will ratchet round when you need to turn. It's just like me running with locked manual hubs and I did the whole Wales weekend, including between lanes, with my hubs locked :thumb2

Can I get in on some LOKKA action too :sly :sly :sly

What to people think of a LSD in the front?

I was close to getting one but think I'll go lokka now as I think for pure off road it will be better. need to do my engine first though :doh

Its getting there. I have engine and all ancillaries, ecu, maf, hd clutch, single mass flywheel conversion but I need a throttle pedal and cable from a y60 2.8 which is impossible to get hold of or even find grrrr.

Im going off roading this sunday to give the old engine one big last hooraaghhh to see it out lol.

Lokka

mmmm lokka porn :naughty

You are all quit enthousiastic about the Lokka, but has anyone experience with other diff lockers as well? The OX Locker for instance? Or Torssen differentials (which is not really a locking system, but more like a LSD)? An OX Locker must be manually switched on or off, and this can be done either by a cable, electric or pneumatic way (for the last one will need a compressor installed too).

Keep it simple :thumb2
Lokka is cheap, available and works without any cable or compressor and is cheap :lol
