Hi, all! Tripped over a Ford Explorer today up in Deepest Norfolk - bald tyres, taxed to end of Feb 2012, not bad looking at all...but veeeeeeery loooooooong...and very cheap!

£950...and I was thinking, "Hmmm...nice...and it's automatic..." - until I lifted the bonnet and saw a badge that said "4.0ltr"....

GULP!!! Counted the cylinders - I made it 6, in V-format - so would I be right in thinking it's petrol?

Might seem a stupid question, but as I couldn't smell either petrol or diesel (nor open the filler flap at that time), I wondered if it would really be a guzzler or not?

hi,

deffo v6 4.0 petrol, always auto,

built the way the yanks have them.

big bus, loads of room for an lpg
conversion.

never been popular here due to like
of derv version. believe plenty of
mods availabe state side.

think in states bigger mills put in,
like the ford mustang 5.0 v8....

once pulled one of a muddy rally field
with its caravan attached with my
old t2. either owner couldnt find how
to engage 4wd or road tyres.

yes mate 4.0 petrol biggest pile of shit made should never imported them
drink fuel like water handle like a boat and spares cost a fortune and if rattling could be timing chain guides and if rear one its engine out my advice is dont waste your money
hope this helps
cheers eboy

Think of it a American L-LWB maverick thats got a drinking problem:D

on top of everything that has been said, they also have a reputaion for cylinder head problems.

I had heard that they suffered from a fault, and the part is either very expensive or nearly impossible to find.:eek:

Not sure which bit, but something on the engine.:nenau

or dont, wouldnt use mav in the same sentence.

think back in the day there was an issue in the
states with firestone tires, several fatexs, probably
not the fault of ford or the explorer but didnt
do anything for reputation.

no connection with nissan stuff as was case of
rebadged terrano into the mk1 mav, or the mazda
tribute into the latter ford mav, mind thats another
gas guzzling yank despite the mazda build.

Cheers, guys! Think that's settled, then!

To be honest, I was just curious about them, as I've never seen one before - it's too long for my drive, anyway! Nice toys inside - all the bells, whistles & gizmos - but that's all...

Guess I'll leave it where I saw it, eh? ;)
