so the engines that are fly by wire (terrano), whats the difference between that and a non fly by wire?? what does it mean? I was just surfing round ebay and noticed a few that said "fly by wire engine"... and wondered what the difference was, and if mine was fly by wire??

HI, the TDs pre about 1996 are non fly by wire and not intercooled

The TDi post about 1996/1997 are fly by wire ( throttle controlled by electrical reostat )

and have an intercooler, easy to spot as they have the air scoop on the bonnet.

There are a lot of electrical differences but mechanicaly they are much the same.... or so I am told.

FBW originates from the aircraft industry. It apeared as a term when mechanical linkages such as chains and cables were being replaced by electronic control circuits, actuators and electrical wiring on flying and engine controls. eg the old jet provost has a chain operating the ailerons from the stick, fast forward a few years and the Tornado has an electricl wire carrying wiggly amps from the stick sensor to an actuator circuit that operates the hydraulic rams.

Its the way a lot of functions on a car have gone and more are going :thumb2

Good example of it working well on some cars is the link between steering wheel mounted cruise control switches and the acclerator actuator and assoc electronics could you imaginge a mechanical linkage operating that :lol

I was watching a documentary on Peterbilt Trucks (American) and they were on about the hydraulic and ir brake systems all being operated FBW.

And a bad example is any Toyota you care to choose with their FBW throttle sticking open or worse still a Pious with its FBW braking too.

ah thats mean Terra - the Toyota problem is a mechanical one thats fixed with some kind of shim I believe.

agree far more interesting, and technical:naughty

NOt at all as I understand it the problem is with the throttle potentionmeter - the fix may be a shim to stop it turning too far but the problem is with the pot, and on the Pious its a software issue on the changeover from regenerative braking to conventional braking.

Lets face it, cars are far too complicated, just like women...........ho, and expensive to run..
