Just been looking at the 3litre truck today. I fitted some LED sidelight bulbs last weekend but looking at them today with the engine running they flicker. I noticed the flickering slightly with dashboard lights whilst on tick over only but not really thought a lot more about it. Now I’m beginning to wonder if the regulator is goosed and assuming it’ll be part of the alternator and cost a fortune. Is there any way of testing this?

Cheers

No in this case I know it’s not the LEDs that have failed but I know the type of failure you mean ted. It’s not just the LEDs that flicker but these new ones seem to have amplified the problem.

There is a 10amp fuse under the bonnet for the sidelights and dash lights, sounds like its on its way out or loose!

Ok I assume you have checked obvious things like battery terminals, alternator belt and tried a new fuse.

Do they flicker when the engine is not running ?

Yeah forgot to mention no flickering from anything when engine is not running.

The alternator is what it is alternating so sounds like you have one of the rectifier diodes failed/failing, you could try putting a 100 amp diode on the alternator output, if this cures it you will know for certain, Rick

I would not rule out a poor connection such as earth connections and of course alternator connections.

That said does have a hint of some a/c current from the alternator though when I had this happen on my Terrano r3mR when the rectifier was failing the battery light on dash illuminated. It was a dull glow battery light for a few days then fully lit up warning light.

I had the alternator repaired by having a new rectifier pack fitted whole job including diagnosis, remove & repair etc was £210. If yours is not the high output unit as mine was might be cheaper to get a new one.
