flange type hubs

can someone explain to me how my front hubs get's drive . They are flange type hubs on it I've read that many of you have either manuel or automatic type hubs
 
Basically - directly, they are constantly engaged, so the front diff turns all the time. I assume Nissan must have done the tests and found negligible difference in mpg/CO, cos with taxation the way it is these days they're fairly sure to want to keep the mpg/CO figures down.
