We recently bought a 2.7TD 1993 just to tow our caravan. I have serviced it, and on removing the really old fuel filter found a lot of loose bits of filter element wafting about. The water trap was half full of a very dark coloured jelly type substance. Cleaned it all up, put on new filter, bled filter using priming pump on top, but when I started it up, huge quantities of white smoke from exhaust and a lot of misfiring. By the way it ran ok before took off ancient fuel filter. Is there a straight forward way to flush or remove the pieces of old filter element from the fuel system pipes before they get to the fuel pump? Is it likely fuel pump will have to be stripped cleaned and reassembled please? Not taken one of these apart before so any advice is welcome.

Has it settled down now and running ok? They can be sods to get all the air out, as there is no separate lift pump- the inj pump does all the priming.

I have a 12v Facet pump i splice in to the line when changing the filter. Saves alot of wear on the starter etc!

There are several things to note:

o Some pattern filters will no seal properly on the filter head.
o check you havent left the old filter seal sat in the top of the head.
o Primer diaphragms can split when used after ages of rest....
o Always fill the new filter with fuel before fitting it.
o Fuel pipes along the chassis rails and top of tank can corrode and let in air.
o Jelly substance was possibly remnants of chip fat oil
o Use new copper washers on the banjo at the pump when cleaning the mini filter.
o Check the lines in the engine bay either end of the steel pipes on the bulkhead- you may have split a perished one when wrestling with the filter etc.

As far as cleaning the fuel system, use some injector cleaner but at 2x strength. Be prepared to be replacing the filter 2 or 3 times if it does collect gunk from the tank.

Hope this helps!

dark coloured jelly stuff... hope its not the diesel bug thats recently been posted about

From my experience, Timbo has hit the nail on the head.

My problem with white smoke was caused by a CHEAP filter that didn't seal on the face. I replaced it with a Nissan one, filled it with diesel and fitted it, primed it with the hand pump, problem solved.

Your filter looks as though it has gone beyond its service life, and Bio fuel can cause this gunge.

Refer to the location of the Mini filter, I think earlier models were fitted with them, and this may have trapped any debris.

Rippin' along

Proper thanks in order to Timbo1975, lawson and rustic for putting me on the path of righteousness. I tightened up the fuel filter a nip and removed the totally blocked up mini filter from the injector pump, (but I will clean it and replace it later, honest) and it is running better than ever before. A big thank you for taking the time and trouble to help. The tickover has gone up 500 rpm but will sort that out in a mo.

Great that has helped to sort the problem.
If the fuel filter is like this then I suspect that all other items need checking.

Since you have given it a service, I hope you have changed the oil filter, this is a task on it's own, several threads on this.

You may need to change the rear diff oil, special oil, LSD (Limited Slip Diff oil), comma do one, you will need to buy 3 litres.

Check gear oil levels in both the transfer box and gearbox.
Check the 4x4 works as they were fitted with Auto engaging front hubs and these can cause problems, but simple to fix.

The hand brake has Auto adjusters, but they don't really do the job, there is a download on adjusting the hand brake.

You may want to grease the 4 steering stops, as you may get a clonk on full lock.

Check the drop links on the front anti roll bar, there is also a down load on this.

You will find that this is the best £10 you have ever spent.:clap

Ted, do you really want to put your Reg number in your details, some information can be seen by non-members? I am not sure of the risk of this but why risk it.

Best regards,
Rustic
