as above ..... I have a 1tb ext hard drive , which seems to have stopped working ...... it doesn't light up and laptop doesn't see it ...... this is a " sealed unit " I think its made by iomega ....... it has all my back up files / pictures / music etc on it ... it seems like the little usb socket thingie is a bit loose ..... there is no way I can repair this myself , its too small and fiddly ......can this be repaired / or the data on it be recovered safely ?

thanks in advance

have you tried a different usb port ? .just asking because one of mine stopped working so I change to a different one and it works now . have you tried in device manager and update drivers for it or reset drivers

There is a very high probability that the HDD inside is a standard SATA type unit. If the USB <--> SATA interface can not be repaired then the drive could be fitted to another external box.

tried different usb ports ....... it simply doesn't light up anymore .....seems to me its not getting power to it through the mini usb socket .

Silly question, have you tried the USB lead on anything else:doh
Could be as simple as that

I'll go along with that, I have a Sata drive in a thin tin box, and when you open it up, it is a Samsung drive, as normally found in lap tops. With a micro connector that goes to a mini connector on the outside of the box.

In fact, I don't use it for the computer, it is connected to the USB port on my Satellite box, so I can record programmes, pause and rewind etc

You can buy empty tin boxes with the connectors quite cheaply, but depends what size drive it is ie 2 1/2" etc...

Go to ebay... search Sata box, and you can get them for 99p inc postage...

Hope it helps..

Is it powered by the USB cable or has it got a power adaptor?

Can you try it on another PC?

its powered by the usb cable , plugging in another usb cable has no effect ..... the socket on the drive appears loose and wobbles

the unit is obviously not receiving power ..... maybe because the pcb behind the socket is damaged / loose ......... the led doesn't light ...... my question is ... can this be easily repaired , or the data recovered easily ?

As has been said, it is normally a bog standard drive in a plastic case. If you can open it careful and take a look. If so then you may be able to hook it up to your PC via a power lead and SATA or most likely an IDE cable.

:doh

cheers rustic :thumb2

im hoping the data hasn't been lost
I would think it should be fine.:thumb2

These connector/pcb assemblies are built to a price... a low price, but the hard drives are much better quality. :thumb2

I have one of these Seagate "Go Flex" adaptors, very useful for connecting random SATA HDD's to USB:

update ....

the drive was too big to fit into a 2.5 case ...... so I had to buy a 3.5 case .....:doh it looks a little like a pea in a drum  , everything works fine now and all the data appears fine :thumb2 , the downside is that the case assembly is mains powered ,so has its own mains lead  ...... still connected to the usb port tho :thumb2
