chaps, had to fit a new centre section a couple of weeks ago. The part that arrived although slightly different in terms of muffler size etc seemd to be the correct size. The mounting bracket is definately different though, but i have managed to mount it just fine.

Now, it turns out that despite everything seemingly fitting ok, i got a rattle. Straight away I knew it was the exhaust, so had a look under just now, and found the front flexi pipe was vibrating agianst the cross member near the gear box.

What I noticed was, thereis a exhaust mounting bracket here, but nothing on the exhaust itself, so there is no way its been mounted before.

I jacked up the centre box and fitted a strong jubilee clip around the exhaust and bracket as a temporary measure, but, what i want to know is why isnt there a mouting point on the exhaust? Is what I have done ok for now??

This might be a different answer, but the U bolt that connects the Exhaust to the bracket on the gearbox can rattle.

1 The bracket sometimes cracks, mine did, a bit of weld sorted.
2 The 8mm nuts on the U bolts vibrate loose, solution... put a second nut on the U bolt as a lock nut... sorted. :thumbs

Hope this helps...

might not be your problem, but could help others..

Best regards, Rustic

right, yes, the problem then is simply i never had a U bolt in the first place!!

to be honest, i was scratching my head trying to think what type of bracket i should have, now it makes sense!!

ill get a U bolt ordered, I suspect as you suggest, mine has rattled off at some point, possibley even before i bought the car 4 years ago...!:nenau

Thanks Rustic!

6 minutes to solve a problem..
Apologies it took too long...

ha ha no thankyou, much appreciated!!

now all I need to know is, what size u bolt to get. i assume the bolt positions may differ with the different sizes...!

You need to measure the Diameter in mm.
You might not need the clamp part, as the U bolt goes through both holes.

TIP..
I always have a few lengths of All thread, ( Screwfix) different diameters, with a suitable former, and a vice, you can make your own U bolts.

ahhh right ok ill do that, cheers Rustic!

Hi Clivvy, if it's the same clamp as I'm thinking of the extra nuts do stop it vibrating once you actually have the clamp:doh

Mine rusted badly and I couldn't get one anywhere. I ended up fabricating one my self. It looks just like a standard u clamp however the folded metal bit extends as a flat piece of steel that bolts to a rubber hanger.

ok cheers JIm, for now i have a large jubilee clip doing the job. Ill drop into a car shop tomorrow hopefully and pickup a clamp, see then if i need to fabricate something!

If you go to page 11 on here...

Do you mean the U bolt just up and to the right of the number "4"?

If you do, my car does not have that one either... The front pipe just hangs from the turbo Manifold, and attaches to the middle section.

Will have to have a proper look next time I go under there, see if I have the middle mount holes.

hmm....not so sure, this looks different to what I have. Essentially, it look sliek I am missing a U bolt. The mounting bracket is there...just no U bolt..!

All I can think is the new exhaust is ever so slightly different to the old one i have removed, and this has somehow allowed the front pipe to drop too much...

i had one of them once, until i got a new full exhaust fiited, then if by magic the new one didnt have it!, i didnt fancy trying to change it myself on the floor with just ramps, to awkward. , if any one does fabricated one, post dimensions and pictures please.
