I know you have all seen this before but just humour me please:augie, Im new to the Maverick thing having just sold a land rover hybrid, my maverick is a 2.7 tdi.
The temp stays on a quater, the chap i purchased the Mav from (my next door neighbour) said that is usually runs on half way but the other week he topped up the anti freeze and since it has stayed on a quater.
I read the various questions and answers and thought it was the thermostat so put a new one in, this made no differance :dohso i drained and flushed the system and refilled, this made no differance:doh.
The top radiator hose is getting hot and is quite hard where as the bottom hose is cold (no heat in it at all) and soft as though no pressure is in it.
Is this just air in the system and i need to rag the pants off it for a few miles or is it something else. :nenau
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
P.S great site and very helpfull.
Thanks
Dave

water pump

fan spinning all the time?
and water driping for bottom of the fan?

also try giving teh bottom pipe a GOOD squise with cap off, could be an air lock..

but then done listen to me..

I know nothing ( before any one else says it !! )

hey zipps , you could be right, stranger things happen

even the loveglove was dr diagnosis today:lol

The fan is spinning all the time but its the viscous type so they do tend to, with the engine off you can turn it, it will not spin but turns quite easy, i havn't noticed any water leaks or blue stains in the snow from leaking coolant, i'm hoping it is an air lock the guy i had it from said he put 3 bottles in it to get the level up so maybe it does have a leak and i havnt noticed it, i'll have a good look tomorrow

thermostat in upside down?

water pumps are a common fault and easily fixed the leak can be so fine it is barely noticable as it evaporates or is dispersed by the wind from the fan before it drips anywhere.

dose the temp rise if you go up a hill? or make the engine work harder? if it stays at a constant temp would not think their is much wrong... the heater still blow hot air?

the top hose will be hotter than the bottom hose as i belive the coolant has been cooled by the radiator before it reaches the bottom hose so is will be a lot colder!!! hope that makes sense:thumbs

Yep makes sense, the waterpump looks to be ok, no drips or stains from the anti freeze, i took the radiator out and flushed it and checked around the the pump while i had a bit of space.
I re filled with water and let it settle while i fitted free wheel hubs, brake pads etc but over the space of an hour or so it took another gallon of coolant. i was occasionally squeezing the hoses to try and get any air out, anyway the end result ive got a nice puddle in the passenger foot well so maybe the heater matrix has gone, but would this give me the engine not heating up thing ??
Cheers
Dave

well the heater takes heat from the engine so i would say you have find the problem!!! also if you have the heater on in this weather that can take heat away from the engine!!! as if you are suck in a traffic jam in the summer if you put the heater on it will take heat from the engine!!!! hope that makes sense:thumbs

Don't take my word for it either but when I had a leak at the water pump the problem was keeping the temp gauge below halfway not getting it up to half way. Once warmed up mine runs at just a shade below half way on the temp guage. Have used both an 88 degree and 82 degree thermostat and needle on temp guage stays around same spot. But when had water leak at water pump as water got low in the system from the leak the temp would go up to three quarters or more on the guage. If you have an obvious leak then it would seem to be that's the first thing to fix and then see if problem is sorted or not.
