Engine running cool and heater not working correctly

I have just bought a 97´nissan terrano 2.7td..... The engine even on an hours run never gets hot and the blower is blowing warm/hottish air but not what it should be..... I suspect a faulty thermostat or temp sensor but was just wondering if anyone has any ideas what to check first and rough idea of cost involved?? Apart from this it is spot on and drives perfect with no smoke and starts first turn of the key even on a cold morning like this..

check your water levels , but these trucks run cold normaly they just dont get hot

Thanks for the reply.... Water levels are fine, It is mainly the blower that is a tad annoying at the moment as it just needs to be a few degrees hotter to help clear the windscreen etc... The temp gauge just does not rise, even on a run it maybe goes a few millimeters above the bottom white line.... Maybe this is normal for these, my last 4x4 was a hilux surf which ran hotter then the sun lol

sounds like you dont have a thermostat in it at all.
might be worth a look

Hi , my 97 tdi was exactly the same as that when I bought it 3 weeks ago. Fitted a new thermostat (£8 from our local motor factors) Now it warms up quick and the temp guage goes to half way and stays there. Heater is lovely and warm. Hope this helps. Teebird.

Thanks for all your help... How big a job was it to change the thermostat?? Will i do any damge to engine running it at the moment like this until i get a new one??

its not a big job to do a thermostat and running it like you are you will do no harm unless the radiator is blocked.
as already said check that all water hoses are equally hot/warm.

Both the following jobs have workshop sheets in the Downloads section of this web site that you have access to as a full member (click on quick links).

Check pollen filter, these block and restrict the air flow.

Thermostat, mine was faulty a few weeks ago but I replaced mine with an 88 degree version. The standard is an 82 degree but local motor factors list both. Mine is nice and warm now.

Also in addition to this if your AC is in working order tunr that on, should be used regular anyway to keep it working. The AC dries the moisture out of the air so it clears the windows quicker and helps keep them clear.

Sounds like a back to basics thermostat job to me :thumb2

Bit of advice though El Hefe, at the price of them replace it anyway. Dont bother testing as the advice often goes. I had a SEAT toledo (Golf 16v engine) and I tested the thermostat a couple of times , it opened and closed no problem but failed to close on the next go. I wouldnt normally have tried it more than once and decided it was ok but as they were a chew on that engine I wanted to make real sure.:thumbs

The question now is when will the local motor factors be open next lol..... Not used to christmas in the uk anymore..... went to try and do some food shopping today and everything was closed lol

You might get some open tomorrow but if you think about it Monday is a bank hol so might not be until Tuesday before shops reopen properly.

On the food front Tesco's have been advertisinf on TV that their sale starts today but I know Morissons are open Sunday for def.

Hi.

I had exactly the same problem. Warmish heater but the needle struggled to reach the start of the gauge.
Fitted a new 88 Degree thermostat on Wednesday 23rd.
Amazing difference Almost tropical now! needle rises to mid gauge and sits there.
Well worth the £6 from my local factors.
I would recommend the 88 Degree, happy warm winters:clap

As for time to do the job, I took approx 3/4 hr start to finish.
Drained a bit of coolant out via btm hose, undo the 3 bolts on the housing. Remove the old thermostat and gasket. Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly and fit the new thermostat and gasket. Top up the coolant.
