Engine oil

im changing the engine my engine oil ( well im not ,but my mate is ) , ive read the manual on reccomended lubricants etc , and i dont understand this api thingie , does anyone know the correct grade to use in pounds shillings and pence ( 15w/40 etc ) :nenau
