Yesterday to my total dispare my engine blew ,i am no mechanic all i can say is there was no warning just driving then there was a noise like tapets ratling then one almighty bang like metal grinding and that was it,oil all over the road and bits of what look,d like parts of the casing,i was informed this is a common fault in navaras of a certain age
is this so and has it happend to anyone else
and are there other engines like a terano 2.7 that will fit a 53 d22
Thanx

Get onto Nissan, there is plenty of forums on knackered Navara d22 engines.

Ahh that'll be Number 3 Piston making a break for freedom through the side of the engine. There's a very recent thread on here from someone asking for advice about buying one of these trucks. Someone posted a reply with a link to the Navara web site. Unfortunately they are renound for it. I'm sure I've heard of someone installing a Terrano Engine in a Navara but not sure how it went. Have a look for the Navara forum and see what other owners have said.

Hiya,

The D22 has a known fault on the conrod going through the block - apparently this is very very common. Cause of this Nissan increased the warrenty to 60k.

Google "D22 engine problems"

If you ring Nissan with your chassis number they will be able to tell you if yours is on the recall list (Id ask before you tell them its f*ked!!)
If you have a full service history, and are still in their warrenty terms you 'may' be lucky!!!!

Fingers crossed mate... :thumb2

As others have said - this engine is very likely to fail around the 80-100k mile mark with no3 or 4 rod going through the block as the little or big end seizes.

It is caused two-fold by primarily- aeration of the oil caused by a faulty pickup tube / split o-rings on the oil pump, and secondly by bearing shells that arent as good quality as they ought to be which have the lube hole drilled in slightly the wrong place so they are starved of oil. Often the shells spin slightly cutting off the oil supply to the small end which seizes and breaks the rod.

There are acouple of well respected firms (one is Billcar in shrewsbury) who offer a kit to solve the problem before it happens (~£1800)

Otherwise you are looking to Nissan for a new engine *IF* you have a complete service history with them. 2nd hand engines are fairly rare as a consequence, but if you do find one (that you've heard running) then it would be crazy not to open it up and apply the Billcar mods to it before installing it.

Sorry not to be able to help more.

Bilcar in Shrewsbury is the place to go. They did mine and a very good job they made of it. Runs like a sewing machine(but wont do buttonholes:D)
Nissan increased the guarantee to 90,000 miles(mine had 96,000) so speak to them. you will need FULL service history
Look here for more advice

The engines can fail at any mileage, once the "mods are done its fine.
Bilcar will fit new shells, bolts, timing and oil chains ,guides whatever,+ a direct connection between sump and oil pump so no air gets in. Ive had 15,000 miles of trouble free motoring since the work was done(new clutch and flywheel skimmed as well) Phone 01743 450044 for advice from Bilcars.(i do not work for them)

- Agreed, Billcar is the place. They may well be able to assist with sourcing a replacement block or short motor. I dont work for them either, but have had nothing but exceptional service from them over the years.
