hi lads,

So yesterday i went from Edinburgh to Inverness to quote a job, over to Aberdeen to see my wee nephew and home to EdinburgH.

now it was a great trip but a few issues happened with the truck, the nsf wheel started squealing, only heard when the passenger window is down and above 20/30mph. Quite high pitched. also in the same area although closer sounding to the engine under hard excelleration there would be a loud burring/fart noise briefly? is this the auto hub on the way out do you recon?

Also after the car cooling briefly in Aberdeen once started again the belts were making some heavy squeezing noises, this has never happened before ever. it went away after 30seconds but i recon this means time for new belts and pulleys.
Anyone ever had these replaced? ballpark cost?

cheers again in advance.

Your first issue sounds like auto hubs for sure, I used to get that crap all the time with the Maverick, they tell tale sign was they got red hot too, one of mine actually managed to melt it's sticker as well!!!! :doh

Can be water on the pulleys, if there doesn't appear to be any moisture there, they may just need tensioning correctly or they may just be wore out, give them a check

Belts

As others have posted can be water on the belts. I purchased some belt lubricant for my Jeep - it cured the squeal but but it still made a noise just a different pitch really so less intrusive, visual inspection revealed belt was in good condition but it has stretched so the tensioner can't do its job.
New Serpentine belt being fitted at the weekend.

On my old Hyundai it was a failing tensioner wheel. Never had an issue with the old Terrano r3mR in 5 years but they were newish when I bought it.

Don't know if it's the same type of tensioner, but just replaced mine which was mullered, mounting brackets everything worn beyond repair.
New unit was £130.
If after inspection your piston is ok, and it's just the noise, take it to a bearing factors for a replacement bearing ( if you can't find the number on it).
That'll save some money and they're not hard to drift out and replace.

Yeah watch those auto hubs, as said when sticking like that they'll hot. One of mine was sat there smoking when I parked up. Check the "brake rings" suspect they'll be catching. The lugs on the inner edge tend to crack and even break off. Changed several sets of rings until I switched to manual hubs.

See the downloads section about servicing the hubs.

As for the belts, try checking the general condition of them and if they're fine I've seen people squirt them with wd40 which seemed to silence them. Not tried it but seen it done where I used to work.

OK auto hubs, lets put one thing to rest once and for all, the brake rings are not the cause of hub failure, they are as a result, what happens is the main inner hub (which is on the drive shaft) is stationary all the time the wheel is turning, so it is this part within the outer hub part that is the problem, how many of you have removed the multi coil flat circlip that holds these two parts together????? and greased it up, not many I bet, but this is the bit that needs the lube, if it runs dry then it turns the inner hub and strains the break ring causing lots of noise and or break ring failure, Rick

Strip, clean and a light coat of grease on mine about every 6 months and have yet to have one fail in 9 years of terrano ownership :thumb2

hey solar man what does that look like/ where is it located? I'm really new to proper mechanic stuff but up for learning so appreciate the advice

Inspected the belts there really pretty worn, the bottom big pulley also wobbles slightly which doesn't look great, I'm going to go see my mechanic today and get a price for a full replacement. hopefully not crazy expensive as I'm skint haha
