The fan on this new truck of mine (2.7 TD) seems a bit stiff. I suspect it is getting driven all the time, and I definitely do not get that typical roar that fizzles out after a minute or so. Or more to the point it isn't fizzling out.

Do I get a new vicious fan or convert to electric in an attempt to reduce noise and increase fuel efficiency?

You will never beat the ability of a viscous fan compared to an electric fan. The only thing I have seen come close is twin 14 inch electric fans on the Australian made holden commodore and ford falcon.

And then you only be putting more load on the electrical system.
If you do I'd recommend getting the 110 amp alternator from a R50 pathfinder/terrano to replace the 80 amp TD27 one.

Quite different conditions in Blighty though lol I did a twin fan conversion on mine, no drama . Only ever got one on and that was only when offloading hard. The 2.7 runs so bloody cold you won't have any issues here, UNLESS you drag a tin tent around
In which case keep with the whirly thing Nissan put in there :thumb2

Beware!!!! When mine stopped roaring it turned out that my water pump has gone, check for leaks and watch your temp gauge

Temperature is fine and I just fitted a 88C stat to get it higher.
Pump is new too.

Maybe I need to swap the fan then. Getting around to it might be a different matter.

Easy swap mate, can def be done in situe with the rad cowling out of the way

Pretty much all the modern type alt will fit. Loads up the scrap yard :naughty
Just so long as you haven't got the vacuum pump type old skool ones

Forgot to say electric fans will only draw about 6-8 amps anyway. No biggie, especially as they're not on much anyway.:thumbs

my viscous fan expoded on my old beast.
I ran all winter without one then did the twin leccy conversion on it but cant remember it ever kicking in.

easy to do and not that expensive.
