Makeitfit suggested in my submission about Terrano 2 auto mpg experiments that I remove the EGR. As I asked before, what is an EGR, where is it, what does it do and finally will it safely possibly improve mpg without affecting something else?? Will it affect the next MOT? Cheers.

EGR, Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Supposed to help bring the emissions under control, as far as I can tell, most car owners in the know, have them removed or blanked off. It should improve MPG, power, running etc etc, its all positive tbh. IF you have one (not all cars do) its located at the rear top of the engine, behind the I/C. it will have one pipe leading from it, over the engine to a set of sensors near the air filter. There is a download that explains how to blank it off in the downloads section :thumb2

If it helps mine is a 99 tdi SE and it hasn`t got one, never had one. I spent bloody ages looking for the damned thing untill someone posted a youtube link to a video of one, it`s in german but shows the exact location

does the mod do anything, if so i might give it a go, just for fun :thumb2

Apparently it fails, costs you more in fuel, is unreliable and has been taken off most vehicles because of the aforementioned problems.
IF you care to do a google search of the item you will be enlightened, i`m just glad mine did n `t have one.

Will it pass MOT ?

If the EGR valve is disabled, will it still pass the MOT?
Using standard diesel fuel.

Or does the ball bearing magically dissapear at MOT time? :naughty

It depends on how much of a smart arse your examiner is :augie If it's just taken off and blanked off then there's a very small chance it could be noticed as "Missing" and therefore a fail :(
That's so unlikely though:rolleyes:
The best way for ultra safeness is to blank it off with a steel plate cut to the size of the gasket.
That way anyone looking for the pipework will see it in place :thumbs
As for emissions then your trucks going to be properly poorly to get close to failing and so the EGR would be the least of your worries:sly
I run mine without EGR and also on BIO and LPG, needless to say I've no issues with any immission's :naughty
So just bin it

The EGR is there one on the 1992 Terrano is it the part that has the ajustable arm.ho can yo tell if its open or shut. Laurie

The EGR opens a valve under certain conditions that sends exhaust gases back into the inlet manifold, I believe this is usually on the overrun as it is complete nonsense to feed burnt gas into an engine on load, the problem comes about in that the seating of this valve gets dirty/sticky (exhaust shit) and so passes gas when it should not, I have this issue with mine right now, as I keep a check on my fuel consumption and it goes up and down like a yo yo and this I think is my EGR valve sticking, but getting the blanking plate (only reliable way) on the petrol engine is a right pig to do, hence not done it yet, as for MOT it cannot fail emissions wise as the conditions needed for the valve to operate cannot be replicated off load, which is how the test is performed, Rick

Oh Laurie, sorry missed your bit, the adjustable arm that you refer to is probably the turbo dump valve, leave well alone, as there is nothing adjustable on the EGR, Rick

like Makeitfit, I am now well on the way, best wishes to all, Rick

What mpg do you get?

I am pretty much fully laden all the time and only drive round town by and large, a long run is 30 miles, but I go from 19 to 25 mpg, and I notice the performance varies, have already disabled the vacuum stuff on the EGR but have two scrapper engines and both show less than complete shut off on the EGR valve, so have to assume mine is leaking the same, copper plate is all that is needed, but getting to it is not easy, Rick

Cheers Rick.

I am looking forward to learning more about this stupid emissions device.
