Question - and only respond if you KNOW the answer as guesses won't be helpful....

Could I take the ECU from another T2 of the same year and spec and put it into my truck and expect it to run as normal, or is there functionality that can't transfer - immobiliser for example...?

ok ....well................... you really need to ask zippy this one.

i guess it might depend on what year and what spec your discussing

shoot........... you dont want guesses do ya............. errrrm cant help you then

no really now,
i think its only the newer common rail engines and the newer petrol's where you need to swap the ecu with the engine...

t2 i would think was ok
your clio def needs ecu with new engine ( example)

No, I had a cunning plan to obtain a s/h T2 ECU, get it remapped and replace existing ECU with it. But, if the ECU really is transferable between identical models, the bonus is it means I can remove it and sell it if/when the truck goes...:naughty

But it needs the confirmation of one of our resident experts - not that you aren't one of course Col!

well toolbox would be the expert in this particular field your munching over...

but im liking the idea cos if you can you could piggyback them and just plug into the ucu you wish to use on a particular day

ie
sport mood or
economical mood

easily accessible too

where is the ECU any ways??

i thought it was behind the radio

Depends on the motor I think - mines behind a plate in the passenger footwell/bulkhead area IIRC. But mines the later OBD2 Bosch EDC15 or something like that.

mine is on the plate in passenger footwell too.... same as the zx

ill look for some ref no's later

Mine is also a 2001 and the ECU is behind the heater controls and almost impossible to get to!!!

will have to take a look when i get time, find it on the 1999

But this remapping lark is a bit hit and miss for my liking.

far too many people at it, so lots of cowboys. Kit seems to vary from a ten quid CD and a laptop cable to two grands worth of electronics. Some use pre-built maps they just use to update the firmware (the technical term for the ECU software settings), others tweak things slightly to get a more bespoke mapping, and the expensive option uses rolling road and dyno testing throughout the process to customise it....sounds favourite but not cheap (no idea how much at this point but will enquire)....

Does make it clear though that the cheaper option of a 'one set of settings' type powerbox is not ideal....there are some that allow you to switch between several settings so more ideal but not quite as good as a custom map - but would you notice the difference I ask myself?

And heres a thought. The cheap nasty option is this 50p resistor that fools the ECU into thinking the MAF wire is colder than it really is, so the ECU squirts more fuel in, but does it indiscriminately and across the range.....but if you only wanted the option in a difficult offroad situation then maybe a switchable resistor might be the thing to look at first - cheap and cheerful starting point? But see what our resident sperts say about it all.....:bow

These dont work. End of story.

i think id only go with the rolling road route and a second ecu...
that way you keep the expensive tuning when you sell it or roll it

but when push comes to shove... if they have spent out on rolling roads and ucu re mapping tuning equipment they should have a better idea what they are doing than someone who just wants to plug a box in for you

but id want references

ecu 50.00 in breakers

id go 500-750
for the best job

cos you get to keep it forever

heres one for you paul...... why not email nismo in japan and ask for advise or any tuning tips.......you have a way with words

they might help
