Hi guys , since stripping the hub on my mav to put new wheel studs in, the wear on the drivers front tyre on inside is shocking. was brand new tyre but now close to bars. Steering wheel is slightly off centre, but no wear on other side. Any ideas welcome thought tracking initially but wouldn't that wear both sides?
Cheers Rich.

start of with checking bearing is tight.

then onto tracking and bushes

hi there, i worked in the fast fit tyre garage for 16yrs using the latest 4 wheel alignment gauges & doing tyres, i found that 90% of cars today will wear tyres uneven on the front ,lot of it is caused with worn springs giving a camber effect heavy braking splays the front out too , most cars today have powered steering which normally tends to wear more on the passenger outer edge ,having the alignment checked is a good practise but beware lots of garages use trackings as the icing on the cake to make better profits you leave thinking its all sorted only to find its back again the following year, check for play first but rotate your tyres round about 6 mth intervals

My tracking is spot on, ie. the car goes in a straight line by itself. However the steering wheel is miles off to the left, so that doesn't mean anything. Jack the drivers side up, get hold of everything and give it a good shake, you'll soon find out what's worn.

Top ball joint :sly Bearing :augie Could even be top arm bushes

If this has got worse since you did the bearing then check the play in the bearing.

its possible to have the steering off set with the alignment ok ,mine is exactly the same where my wheel is at 2 clock when it drives straight ,i need to stop the car where the steering wheel is at 12 clock mine will need half turn out, track rod on drivers side ,half turn in on passenger side to compensate ,the alignments not being ajusted your just moving the steering wheel in line

No play in bearing, after I did hub I had to turn bearing ring another smidge as there was some play there, But after doing that was fine, packed it with plenty of grease as well. Drives fine no noises or handling issues but something must be amiss as I couldn't believe the wear when I was checking air etc today!! Will get it on jack tomorrow if not snowed in but really wanted to have a play if snow does arrive in midlands!! :(

Did the bearing and hub go back together properly ? I had all sorts of trouble with my old Terrano -couldn't get the circlips back on and it took bloody ages to get it together properly.

Yeah everything went back together fine! I had to do it twice too as too much play in bearing first time. 4wd working fine so no problem there. Didnt get too much chance to investigate yesterday due to weather and work, but did get it jacked up and although im no expert by any means everything seems fine apart from anti roll bar link looks very worn drivers side and is sitting on the p**s. Could this cause tyre wear like that though?
Cheers Rich..

Have you checked the torsion bar settings, I had a similar problem caused by exhaust fitters removing the torsion bar to fit the new stainless exhaust and not setting it to the correct height when finished.
In my case the nearside front tyre wear was much greater than the offside but the tracking was OK. The reduced height changes the caster and chamber angles.
