New clutch master cylinder came today. says on pack only use dot 3.can you still get dot 3.

there is loads on ebay, so yes you must be able to :thumb2

great i just phoned local motorfactors to be told cant get anymore.halfords local dont stock.other thing is handbook says dot 4.

You may find that some DOT4 is also suitable for DOT 3 as I believe they were both based on the same technology - was it glycol like the old antifreeze?

whereas (I think) DOT 5 maybe silicon based.

best to check with some one who know though :thumb2

Dot 3

As its in your clutch cylinder heat performance is not an issue so dot 3.0 or above is fine.

I use Halfords dot 5.1 in everything (its not silicone based)even the wifes Merc as its a higher spec than the MB part.

Do you have any farm suppliers anywhere? My local farmers store sells DOT3, maybe worth looking through yellow pages?

If you want to look at brake fluids from a chemical standpoint DOT 3 fluids are based on glycol and glycol esters. DOT 4 fluids are much like DOT 3 fluids, but also contain borate esters. There is another rating called DOT 5.1 that consists of borate esters

i assume something must be eating rubber seals and thats why they state dot 3. they sent me a different make cylinder.

my guess wasn't far out then, I think the best thing to do is a bit of research and even call milners and explain the dilemma, as your slave cylinder isn't under guarantee and you need something compatible with both :thumb2

So according to that link dot4 is prob your best bet anyway :thumbs
