Guys,

Since I bought my Terrano the lock doensn't work when you trie to lock or unlock the car with the key.
You can turn it round and round and with loads of luck it sometimes does what it needs to do and then a 100 times anymore.

Just to be safe when the battery remote of the remote is dead I still want to be able to get in the car, so wanting to do something about this.

Do I need to change the complete lock or is it something else?

Worn key can cause this, I had it on a Mav I had two keys one did what you say the other was fine so had another cut from good key or you can go to Nissan and get number of your key if it is the only one and not copy-able, Rick

I've only got one key, but shouldn't it also give problems with the ignition switch?

No there is some kind of safety thing in the door lock that means if it is "Picked" it just turns, Rick

That explains it :thumb2
Gonna get myself a new key then to try that out.

Thanks!

Older nissans used to have a white sticker in glove box with key number on or if you have old book pack that came with the car.
Key number format is X followed by 4 numbers, on the sticker if still there the X often looked like a Y.

Basically Nissan keys have 8 cuts along the blade which are mirrored on the opposite edge. The cuts have 4 depths with 4 being the deepest which is up to the first ridge along the blade with number 1 being just a slight nibble out of the blade. I used to be able to read the cuts but have not done that for years.

I used to work at a dealers many years ago and for some reason I used to love cutting worn keys and getting it right.

Now there's knowledge you just can't buy!!!!!!

That is some great information indeed and not sadness :thumb2

Sadly there came no book with my car, so gonna have a dive in the glove box.

If you can find a key cutting company that can cut by the depths and post a photo I might be able to decipher the cuts for you depending how worn it is. Remember if you have a copy made from your existing key it may do the same.

As a thought have you tried trusty wd40 in the lock barrels?

That is a great offer! :thumb2

We have some companies around who can make keys with the depths you give them, so that would be a good (and cheaper) option.
In the past I've tried some trusty WD40, since I'm still at home this week I'll give it another go to be sure.
But it doesn't hurt to have a spare key in the first place :)

Are these pictures good enough?
My phone isn't the best one any more and else I'm gonna give the normal camera a quick charge:

Thats how the guy at my local locksmith did my flip key when I went to get it cut. They said the origanal was much to worn.

He just looked at the key, said some numbers aloud, then the even older guy had a look, they agreed on the numbers, cut the key and it worked first time.

Very impressive.

The new key has a surprising amount of extra meat on it, which is handy as the second to last cut is the deepest, so was yery thin and easy to bend, even against other keys and stuff in your pocket.

That’s a difficult one as it’s so worn, possibly a copy from another worn key. I’m getting 9 cuts and I know there’s only 8. Problem is that all of us have done it taken a key into a shop and their machine simply follows the profile so your master key is worn and all the others are the same.

See what you think but from the tip working towards the handle I am getting the following.

1 2 3 3 1 4 2 2 3

I’m wondering if it’s the number 3 cut nearest the handle that is the extra cut that is not needed. If the keys are cheap I’d be tempted to try the number above but without the last number 3 digit but I can’t promise it will work.

Don’t forget once you get a working key there is also the transponder to worry about too.

Wish I had the old trigger type key cutter and some blanks as I’d of cracked that one.

in the past i have had keys cut via key cutting firms online send them a picture of the key then they can cut a new normal blank from your picture all the ones i have had done online have been fine:thumb2

Wow, that was quick! :)
I find it a bit strange that there is an extra cut that isn't needed.
Could be an old copy, car is 15 years old so that one is worn out as wel then.

In town we have a key maker that can program a transmitter, so that problem should be okay.
A new key is around 10 euro's over here so that isn't a big deal if it doesn't go right the first time.

Thinking about ordering a blank key and give the guys a visit with your information.

Thanks again! :thumbs

I think it looks like an extra cut due to it being a copy made from the profile of a worn key, probably before you bought the vehicle. I’ve been thinking about it and for some reason I seem to remember someone on here many years ago finding a sticker on the actual steering lock. I’ve also had another thought too, is it possible the door lock has been changed so is a completely different key? Will your key fit any other barrels besides ignition, does the glove box or tailgate have a lock?

You see what happens when I’m off sick with nothing better to do?

One sick man over here too

Tomorrow I will have a look on the steering lock if there maybe is a sticker over there.

Besides the drivers door lock and the ignition there is no other lock to try the key.
Al the other doors have no lock to fiddle with.

Makes the story a little more exiting on my Terrano
