Just bought my very first 4x4 for towing logs: 3.0 SVE, '02, 118K, FSH with all receipts.

I've never had a 4x4 so I'm really quite clueless here. As in the title does the Terrano II 3.0 have a diesel particulate filter? Reason I'm asking is that in going through the receipt history and service checks I can't see anything to do with DPF oil being replaced, if it exists.

Also whilst I'm at it how long should the cat last (if it exists)?

Very happy with no DPF to go wrong. Had one leaking regeneration oil on Citroen Berlingo all over gravel drive. Horrible stuff!

I don't think they do but can't say for sure but there are a few 3L owners on here who will know or the guy's with the 3L Patrols should know as Nissan fitted the engine from the Patrol into the Terrano:augie

Yup no DPF, we get some funny complaints at work about DPF being in London...

The system works by gathering a lot of the soot and will burn it off when a forced regeneration starts, but the criteria must be right.

You must be doing a minimum speed of around 50mph, this is because the exhaust system heats up to about 600 degrees to burn off the collected soot.

If you brake to slow for traffic it will likely cut the cycle or count as a failed regeneration attempt... (Also to stop your vehicle catching fire) :lol

Great if you live in the sticks, terrible if you live in London...

We often clean the DPF system in coca cola over a weekend, this usually does the trick when a replacement system is £1200

DPF

Think legal requirements for DPF was introduced in 2009 forcing manufacturers to fit them though some may have put them in earlier.

On Mercs the DPF burn off cycle does not activate if the tank is below half full. There have been a lot of issues with the small engined ML's 250 badged 2.2 litre engine.

I am aware of a couple of cases where Merc have done a buy back of vehicles having problems with the DPF. It's not just School run use either.
