As the title says do you have a winch or a second battery, particularly one running high drain accessories (yes, like a winch)?

If so do you have a second alternator or a split charge system?

Not part of the poll, but if you are running a winch from a split charge has this system ever let you down?

Only just finished fitting mine yesterday, so luckily it has not let me down yet..:lol

I went for a high(ish) current split charge system, using 140amp voltage sensing relay, and 16mm2 cable for the charge cct to hopefully get as little volt drop as possible.

Currently (ha ha) only my roof lights, and front spot lights are running off the second battery, so about 320w, or 26 amp is the maximum load so far. The main reason I wanted a second battery was for running an Inverter, and PA for the ferret PR events we do through the summer, and as a second battery for when we stay away "Off Mains" with the caravan and want to watch the TV in the winter evenings, again using the caravan inverter. The idea is the spot lamps will just "Work" the battery in the winter to stop it getting lazy being just charged and never discharged.

Edited to add, I would love to see a photo and explanation of how a second alternator was fitted.

My second battery is only used as a back up.

The problem with keeping the Mav garaged in the winter, is that it always starts first time. So you never really know the state of the battery.

So if I stop over somewhere and the Mav is left out in the cold, then there is a greater chance that the battery may then show it's age.

It did it once to me.. That was once too often.

So I can select when the second battery comes in.

140? do you mean 40? :nenau for an photo and explanation see Solarman's, off road motor thread, he has done a 'bang tidy' job of it :thumb2

My system has a 180a load capacity. Although that rarely gets pushed as my current 2nd battery is small and only used for radio equipment when engine is not running.

Also helped when my main battery died.

so where are all the pics!

Pics you want pics you get, Rick

Sorry seems that as I uploaded this pic to "new off road motor" will not let me do it again, I will get round that soon, Rick

maybe not tried renaming the pic but looks like I cannot do it that way, so you will have to wait till tomorrow and I will take some new pics, Rick

There's not the right option for me to answer the poll :augie
I have 12,000 lb winch 12v at 6.0hp and 4.5 kw and ONE count them 1 battery :D It is a Numax marine dual fuel thingy "leisure" starter dooda. 110AH and 100cca Been on there a couple of years now and never been an issue. Mind you I very rarely winch with the engine off :thumb2
I also run a large power amp for the in car sounds but cant remember how many oomphs it needs :lol
