Our mechanic removed the pollen filter when it went in for service (due to poor air blow), but hasn't installed a new one. He said I shouldn't worry about it, but my question is whether it is that necessary to have it?

Agreed, it does improve airflow however

Take a look at an old pollen filter and look at all the grime coated on it, then ask yourself if you'd rather that have got trapped in the pollen filter or whether your lungs would benefit from it :doh

Not your fault mate but the mechanic should have known better, you asked on here so proves you have your head screwed on, maybe the other lads will have a different point of view

Did he use the same reasoning with the air filter? NO Put a new one in.David.

Personally I replace it every 18 months or so, the grot that they collect is yuck. It does block and reduce air flow yes or has with both my terranos. I think especially if your air con is working it is needed, imagine the moisture around the air con rad inside the blower unit with all the bits and muck being clogged up.
Theres a download showing how to replace and its easy to replace.

I didn't get to see the old filter, but I agree that it is probably best to put a new one in. The Air Conditioning was removed by a previous owner, btw.

As above, the fact that they get so dirty, shows what a great job they do. They are cheap enough, and even the auto factors do replica ones, so easy enough to source. I change mine each year, at the June MOT service, and am always amazed just how much junk it has collected.

The other thing is, if you compare the weight when you take one out, to the one you put in, that is all dust and pollen that was not blown into the car.

Or worse still, the oil filter as these are cows to change on the 2.7, the pollen filter is easy to change, just take your time with the glove box.

So, having viewed the workshop download.....my question is.......is it the same for my 2002 3ltr SVE, and where do I obtain the filter.......

Their all the same only difference yours has a bigger engine under the bonnet:augie you'll get one from ebay or your local motor factors:thumb2 or if you've won the lotto you could go to a Nissan dealer for one:lol:lol

Yep, changed mine with one from ebay on my 3.0 it was exactly the same as my old 2.7

Normally fitted to models that have or had air con fitted. Checkout the downloads

Had one on my 1999 T2 Jim & that didn't have air con:augie kitchenman check the down load on it & have a look at yours as it doesn't take long to take it out, took mine out a couple of months ago to check it's condition & wasn't as bad as I thought it would have been so gave it a good hoover & refitted it until I ordered a new one which I forgot to do:doh

Hmm interesting views here, I personally reckon he didn't fit one because he didn't have one, at the same time, I am imagining the dirt

Nothing that really concerns me, and anyone who is concerned should be wearing one of these whilst walking down the road...

We live outside a main road and the window blinds are black after 2 months

I swear by clean pollen/cabin filters. When they get blocked and grotty, your are more prone to condensation and the related issues. I've only had my truck a few weeks, and as soon as I swapped the filter out I've not had any internal condensation and the heaters are like jet turbines.

Hi guys, thought I would post an update on this thread.

Just finished (between rain and gales!) fitting new pollen filter (£9.38 from fleabay, with free delivery....even to here!).

Used the workshop download....excellent, thank you to whomsoever wrote it up....brilliant, took less than half an hour. Felt a bit silly standing on my head in the passenger footwell, to see the two bottom screws to the glove box ! ! !

The old filter, which I imagine was probably original, was foul........nasty black grunge on one side, and crap on the other, so well worth replacing.

Once again, proving that membership of this forum, apart from the great craic....is worth every penny for the mechanical etc assistance it gives you, saving money and time......:thumb2

Top job buddy :clap

No, none on the td version, but then you do have the auto hubs, and three grease nipples on your front drive shaft.

But I have them and a pollen filter on my TDi.

It's the later ones that they removed the auto hubs...

There was the early part of the tdi's production that was fine, then they got their pencil out, sharpened them and reduced costs...

Underbody protection seemed to be compromised too at some point, probably more to do with the change in the paint system to acrylic.
