diff oil change is it important

hi guys few threads ive posted on this site finding my way around my terrano 2.7tdi lwb 2001 has been very helpfull & of course money saving:lol. quite a few replys reguarding changing diff oil, its something ive never done in previous vehicles & just wondering why so important on the terrano . as far as im aware the diff runs quiet & smooth no noises judders or vibrations

it is because the T2 has a limited slip rear diff that needs special oil and it needs changing from time to time, what happens is the clutch starts to lock up as the oil deteriorates and you start to get kick out on wet corners, roundabouts etc, Comma do a good oil that is a very good price, Rick

aaargh! cheers didnt realise it affected the clutch :doh i pressume its simple drain then top up with fresh ill look into it cheers for advice:thumbs

Mine needs changing and with these cold mornings corners can be quite interesting :O)

The breather pipe on my diff snapped of years ago so oil is probably full of crap.

drove the wifes Mk 2 the other day and did not realize how bad my Mk 1 was, so need to do the oil soon, I did it about six months ago but only after putting the wrong oil in, and I knew it would be contaminated and need doing again but had not appreciated how much or soon it would need sorting, but as Mudlife says, can be interesting, but it does keep your attention up, Rick

well i didnt know there was a clutch pack in the diff :doh i assumed it was like any other diff beval gears & oil . it explains the reason for oil change :lol... any idea on the amount needed also what grade in these, thanks for the help:thumbs

make sure you can undo the filler plug before you drain the oil out of the lower drain plug.

They have been known to sieze up

Make sure you buy the packs with the expanding spout as its easier to pour. If you get stuck,pm me and I'll pop over and give you a hand to do it. David.

If you have the diff with the access plate bolted on the rear, capacity is one and a half litres. If the diff has the 'innards' accessed from a front bolt on plate I think it is nearer 3litres. Whatever grade you get make sure it is proper LSD (Limited Slip Differential) oil.
