I was a custody Sergeant at Ilkeston Police Station when Mr Baungartner attended for a voluntary interview in connection with the death of an intruder he disturbed at his home.
No social media outcry as he was not arrested and released pending CPS consultation who later took no further action as the force used was reasonable in the circumstances. As I recall after a fierce struggle the intruder was held briefly by Mr Baungartner in a head scissors hold before he escaped, collapsed in the rear garden where he died from blood filling his lungs as a result of a small bone breaking in his neck puncturing an artery.
The Burglar's Family tried to take legal action themselves on behalf the deceased burglar (a drug user) who was not known to Police beforehand - Civil action failed.
