As stated in an earlier post, boot on one of my cvs is split. Had to drive quite a few miles (on road) after that.

As far as I can see, no grit inside the CV - is there a way to clean the grease out, repack it and install new boot?
I know I'll need to replace the upper balljoints when doing the boot / cv joint.

As far as I know, there is no way to properly clean them and re-pack them. Best you can hope for, is to use a scraper to remove as much of the visible dirty grease as possible, and hope any dirt is stuck in that. Then cover with new grease when you reassemble with the new boot.

Not sure if what sort of hubs you have, but if Auto/Manual (and you unlocked them for the return journey), hopefully the front drive shafts have not been turning to push the dirt in further.

Manual hubs, unlocked for the journey - so front drive shafts not turning then.

OK. Parts ordered - very good info from and contact with Milner Offroad!
If delivery time estimation is correct I might even be up and running again after the weekend :)

It's threads like this make me glad the Trol cv's are protected within the swivel joint on the axle...

Bore off gaylord :hide:

I'll remember that next time I need to recover you from a muddy hole with the Trol

I know you enjoyed it when I slapped you on the arse on the laning weekend but honestly I do that to all the girls, get over it bud :p

I this forum had a "like" button I'd use it now :)

Anyway, exhaust removed. Was about time, one gasket was half gone and found several rust holes. Front cross member loosened, but I don't know how to get it from under the car - gearbox support thing seems to be intact, but I'm afraid the gearbox will drop if I remove that crossmember.

Still have to remove most of stuff to get to the CVs. Manual hubs are off already, that was easy :)

You will need to use a trolley jack under the gearbox to support it, and lift it a bit to get the cross member out. It's a bit of a fiddle to get the cross member out, but I have done it a couple of times now.

OK, thanks for the tip! I do have the trolley jack underneath, but was afraid to lift the gearbox. Will try tomorrow!

Gearbox??? thought you were doing front drive shafts joints/boots, or have I been asleep, Rick

Front cross member took a beating too, Rick.

front x member as in the one that supports the front diff? in that case it will not come out without cutting two of the 4 bolts as they will not come out, and to remove just this x member the diff will stay in place rock solid, Rick

Good point... I must admit, I forgot about that one, as you say, it's not really a removable one. I had assumed he meant the one under the gearbox.

It is the one under the gearbox, 2 bolts on either side into chassis, and 2 smaller bolts/nuts in the middle, going into the gearbox support.
All came out without a problem.
