Hi all,

I bought my Terrano in May 5 years ago and it had a crack in the windscreen starting 5 inches from the bottom nearside corner projecting upwards about 9 inches then over across towards the centre of the drivers view.

I had Autoglass in to replace the screen but exactly the same happened again about a year and a half later. This time last year exactly the same happened again so I asked the Autoglass guy to call me out of work when he had the screen out so I could investigate. He didn't call me out but said there was rust in the area of the bulk head infront of the affected area but the seat the screen sits in is o.k.

No impacts to the windscreen and this morning I have just noticed it's happened again :eek::eek::banghead:

Has anyone got any theories as to what could be causing this?

Same place every time.

got to be a bad spot spot weld or two on the body in that area allowing movement, Rick

Bad rust/corrosion in the bulkhead itself. Funnily enough we were speaking about this today.. :doh

Adz showed me a crack on his windscreen today, said it was the bulkhead gone.
Allowing the body to flex I guess, onlike older car modern windows seem to be part of the structure and bonded in.
Have a chat with Adz

Hmmm this does not sound good at all :eek::eek::eek:

There is a hold ( tin worm ) in the pannel under the area about 6 inches away about 3" in diameter but the metal between this hole and the windscreen is intact.

Apparently rust at anypoint where the windscreen is bonded, can cause the screen to crack. The problem is getting a good butchers at it and having some time to sort it out whilst the windscreens out.

I don't think Mr Autoglass is going to be happy to sit about whilst I get the tools out attacking the tin worm..... so....does any one know - If I took the screen out myself, preped up the affected area ( if that's what the problem is ) and then presented the vehicle to have the glass fitted, would this be a problem?

I am just worried that if they knew the cause of the screen going again then my windscreen insurance may be affected.

You may need to confirm with your insurance, with regards to how many windscreen repairs you are allowed in a given time.As for the prep work, who is to know what you have done once its covered in Hammerite. You could argue that you are just doing some preventive work.

You'd be best off with it sat up, get the window out, go to town on it, then call em back. Don't wanna rush n not do the job properly. From what adz said it was quite a big welding job.

It's all doable, I fitted a new head rail to my GT6 front screen, which had been cut from a Spitfire frame, just takes a bit of time and lots of measuring.
Get the screen removed and get the grinder out.
Have a good look and then get some good sections cut from a scrapper.

Orrrrr, break the screen out, do all the welding, then call the insurance comp and let me know some little hoodlum broke the screen, you courteously removed the sharp edges :augie

It's got 12months M.O.T - I wonder if I could live with the crack right across the screen and scrap it next year?

Choice is yours. It might be perfect for even longer, or it might break..

If you cant afford to tackle it, I'd live with it and see how it goes :thumb2
