cough and splutter

Hi all.
Recently my terrano has developed a problem so I'm after a couple of tips to diagnose the problem.
On the first startup of the day when the engine is cold it splutters like a misfire and ticks over very lumpy. Also I get clouds of white / blue smoke. Some times it conks out but it only does it for about a minite. After that its spot on and drives fine with no smoke.

check ya glow plugs, air filter etc. are you running on veg?

Cheers steve. I haven't used veg oil on this one yet. Air filter is new maf is clean fuel pipes seem pretty decent.
Haven't done the fuel filter yet and haven't checked glow plugs so I'll give it a go.
I've had a inclin that there may be a bit of water in the filter with having the whiye smoke as I'm not loosing any coolant
