Hi All,

Can anyone recommend brake / coolant for a y60 Patrol?

Thanks all!!

Brake fluid= Dot 4, coolant red or blue I tend to go red but it is just a matter of choice, Rick

Yeh Dot 4 brake fluid.

I use Comma G48 (green) in my Y60.

Another vote here for G48 green coolant, these older style engines are grateful for coolant with higher glycol levels in, have a bit of a Google and thank me later :)

I certainly wouldn't be putting red or blue in a Patrol

Why is that then Zac, as far as I am aware the red has better corrosion protection than all the others, Rick

From all the reading I did into this subject years ago, green is Ethylene Glycol based that is manufactured with different corrosion inhibitors which are supposedly better for older/classic vehicles.

I read pages and pages on it on a classics forum before, there was a superb post by a guy who clearly knew his stuff, I googled what he'd posted which was backed up by multiple other sites, so I took it as fact and have only ever used Green coolant in my Terrano's.

Of all the Terrano's I've pulled in and broken/owned/worked on, all have them have had green coolant apart from one which had red. Funnily enough, the one with the red coolant was a breaker I stripped on my drive and when I took the radiator out, the rusty sh*t that came out of the bottom of the rad was disgusting!!!!

Dexcool rings a bell for the red stuff, I'm going to have to have a Google again :lol

I do remember the red stuff has to be swapped less frequently :nenau

That is interesting Zac.

I run my Patrol on Comma G30 (red/Violet) as recommended by Comma themselves. When I was searching for coolant nearly every website said that G48 (Green) is not suitable for the Patrol. Unless of course, 24 years old isn’t old enough.

Our Patrol's are the same year and when I dropped the coolant in mine when I ripped the engine out it was green.

Have a google on it and you'll find plenty literature on it out there.

I'm not going to go out there and preach to people what they should use in their trucks especially if it deviates away from what the owners manual tells you to use, but I've certainly done enough hours of research online and spoken to a few old timers who've advised me that in these old beasts the green will look after your cooling system nicer, especially if there's aluminium involved :thumb2

Rob's been using Green stuff in his 1989 Y60 and he's not had any cooling issues as of yet

It is really a matter of choice, years ago you had to get AF that was specific to to Ali engines and rads as these were nothing like as common as today, the same applied to CH systems, Ali was unheard of in CH, but today AF and CH inhibitors have addressed these points, the point to remember Re AF is that after a few years while the Glycol may not have deteriorated the inhibitor part will have, and another point of note is never use de ionised water, Rick

You might well be right rick, I'm going to continue to use Green for as long as I can get it at a reasonable price :thumbs

Yeh I've had no issues with green, and it's what was in mine when I got it.

Like Zac, I'll keep using green, it's what most of the Aussie's on the Trol forums (at least those running the 4.2) recommend as well.

Thanks guys. Some good discussion on this. Ill plum for the Comma green coolant and see how i go.

This is the stuff I use, easily accessible and cheaper too on the trade card :sly

If you look at the recommended fluids list, you'll need 10 litres, if you look a little further to the right, you'll notice the 2.4 Petrol, 2.7 TD (Non Intercooled) & TDI all require (Ethylene Glycol Base) whilst most red coolants are now Ethylene Glycol based, you can still fall foul of filling up with Propylene Glycol coolant if you're just going by the colour.

If you want to know why the Green stuff is better for the older engines, it's to do with IAT's (Inorganic Acid Technology). By nature of their DNA, IAT's are far superior to OAT's (Organic Acid Technology) for their anti-corrosive properties, it's generally accepted that IAT's can be used safely in vehicles up to 2000. The downside to this is that Green coolant doesn't last as long and should be swapped every 2 years whereas Red can be good up to 5.

As we know with the Terrano, the 2.7TDi block you got back in the 90's didn't really change to the block that they were still dropping in at 05/06 when they were coming to the end of production, therefore, Green Ethylene Glycol IAT coolant is what you want for your Terrano.
