ok so if the t2 rear axle is the patrol axle but shortened

could you with a bit of work put a patrol one on a t2 and put the front axle on the t2 as well for stronger steering

as far as i can see the steering is the t2's downfall

Front diff is on the wrong side to use the patrol axle on the front of a T2.

oh ... so noit such a cool idea after all

but is ther another way around it.... its just too week for what i want it for

all those joints just dont work for me

Buy a patrol? It would probably end up cheaper than doing SAS.

I believe the axle to use is a jeep one, Dana 44 rings a bell but that migt be wrong.

dont want i big heavy patrol i like the t2 mav for size etc

i know im a pain and im probably on one of those extremely stupid moments, more because i don't understand any of it. but want to learn

so putting my novice thoughts on the problem

if the diff is on the drivers side and you want it on the passenger side. turning it upside down will do this

now i really don't know how it all works but what i have seen is a filler hole and a drain hole. i bet these could be changed for a small fee.
im guessing the steering components could be switched sides. so that would only leave the mounting bits that would need changing

but my plan could fall on its ass if it reverses the rotation of the diff. ive not worked that out yet

or is the jeep the way to go... are we talking Cherokee or what

Yes it reverses the direction of the diff - so no that won't work.

Also it knackers up all the king pin inclination and castor - basically it just don't work.

TBH I'm not up on which jeep it is - stick your nose under a few you'll soon work it out.

Hi Trex, didn't you say there was a LSD from a subaru that might fit?
Maybe a better way forward than an axle job!:augie

that would give you lsd on the front

i want rigid axle i can diff lock it if necessary

tougher steering and no stupid torsion bars is what i want

Right then there's a few of them there jeep things up the scrap yard. If you get back up here we'll go and have a spy:thumbs

The R180 diff (like the T2s) was fitted to some special edition scoobies however there are a number of problems, not insurmountable but you can't just buy a scooby diff.

1stly ratios will be totally wrong.

2nd scooby diff is designed to be driven the other way around.

3rd its also a different casing with a much longer nose etc.

The scooby LSD may be able to be transplanted into the T2 casing, just the LSD in place of the planet gears etc. But the bolt holes may not line up (they also may) basically there could be some machining invloved to get this to work.

Or you could get a R190 or R200 which are in stuff like Nissan Sliva, Skyline, 300ZX etc. Again you'd need a different ratio cwp but these ae available in the right direction drive from the states. They are available as viscous, gear and plate type LSD. A locker is also available for the R200, I don;t think theres one for the R190 though.

Theres also an issue with the drivesafts. Basically there a few different styles of te way the shafts go into the diff, but you can't change as you need the side tube. That means if the scooby LSD has different number of splines you may need custom shafts/stubs

You need more flex, if you've got wheels on the ground you don't need LSDs and lockers. Also try left foot braking if you start spinning a front, it gives a mild LSD effect and will get you out most times. Landy drivers have to do it all the time when they get cross axled.

Yep I understood flex was good and now realise that LSD option list is over my head, cheers anyway:thumbs
Been working on my left foot braking anyway, just got to "remember" to do it when actualy needed:augie
Any milage in variable brake bias then:cool:
Got one for the cortina but that was for burnouts:naughty:lol

why, where ya going? :nono

i just dont think the t2 steering is up to the heavy ruts all day long or the heavy rock climbing

they are more than capable in every other way, im just struggling with the boulder climbing and the heavy banwen type ruts

there has to be a way around it

Makeitfit - you could use a line lock to disable the rear brakes while you left foot to make the front work.

Extreme - steering wise there is a mod, its been detailed on here before that does away with the 2 ball jonts on the drag link and replaces them with plain bearings or brass bushes, thats the way forward if you still need to sort the steering further. Also an idler arm brace. Again its been detailed on here before.

Hmmm, maybe like Trex said a Patrol, SWB:augie
But as we said the other day these T2/mav things are a great allrounder and you're probably starting to go more rad. off road now:cool:
Why not sell Lous and get a little samurai and lift it to the gods and stick some bonkers wheels on:sly

to be honest the the ball joins are a problem they seem to be the route of the problem, no matter how new the parts they just have that little bit of give and the problems begin . and the idler . well in short they are poop
the one i bent i still cant explain how it happened
no sign of damage or being knocked or pushed. it bent on strata florida for gods sake its not the moon (milners part tough)

im now only using proper nissan idlers ok from the breakers. but keeping them connected to the relay rod to save the joints.
and removing all the rubber washers ans seals . and using big washers instead its the only way i can reduce the movement. i also use two locking nuts to lock it so it dont come loose
so far this method has proved very good no problems for 6 weeks and ive given it some ........ it usually breaks the same day

im just uncomfortable with the steering breaking that easy. as recovery is near impossible so fix on site is the only option

unless i go proper axle

I like Trex idea on the steering mods.
I'll have a search tomorrow and see if they can be found:cool:

Here you go this is the thread on the steering mods.

I've not put a great deal of effort into it but I keep trying to get a spare draglink to do this with. Once someone has a spare and does it we'll be away cos, there'll be a spare knocking about for peope to mod and then pass on their old one. The place that was dooing themin the states did them on a strictly exchange only basis.
