When I start the truck up in the mornings there's white smoke out the back for a while, quite a cloud of it. If I don't drive off straight away it ticks over a bit erratically. Not like it's going to stall, more like it's missing a beat every so often. And every 'miss' is accompanied by a puff of white smoke.

It runs perfectly once it's warmed up, and it doesn't smoke or 'miss' when I start it in the afternoon to come home from work.

It's parked in a very sheltered area overnight and out in the open all day.

Any ideas ?

One glow plug down, or a tight valve on the one cylinder.

what's the best way to check the glow plugs ? Nearly electrocuted myself checking the plugs on my last car. The glow plug light stays on for about 10 seconds, seems a bit long to me. Could be related ?

Mine does exactly the same because i still haven't got around to fitting new glowplugs.

Bugger, was hoping it was going to be something I could fix for free :augie

have you checked the glow plug relay?

Not yet, sounds similar to your problem Clivvy, did you get it sorted yet ?

John

no JOhn BUT I have NO smoke, just the typical diesel puff of smoke that clears and does not continue under hard driving. PLus, my issue is VERY random, for example it hasnt done it now for about 3 days since i put some fuel system cleaner in (but its probably nothing to do with the cleaner)

it does sound liek glow plus issue for you, but id check the wiring-unplug the glow plug wire and clean the connectors, trace it back to the relay and just double check thats in good condition...
