I bought a 98 2.7 TDI Maverick just over a week ago. After a couple days I noticed the clutch pedal didnt always come right up to the top, a couple times it stayed down and couldnt get into gear until i pulled the pedal up with my foot.
On Saturday though when i went to go out i started it up but when i pushed the clutch pedal down it made a horrendous noise, like metal on metal. I have been told it sounds like the clutch release/thrust bearing is knackered. I guess this means its gearbox out time to change the clutch?
Or is there anything else I am missing?
If the box has to come out is it relatively straighforward, other than the weight of the box!

It sounds like collapsed thrust bearing but could also be the clutch fork P/N 305317F000.
If the pedal did not return, it means the fork has not pushed back against the slave cylinder returning your clutch pedal ( master cylinder) back to its original position. This suggests the fork is now damaged and grinding against the thrust bearing.
This is a Nissan only part which does occasionally fail causing the fault you have described.
:(

There is another recent post here about gearbox problems - major job - recon box + clutch + labour £1,500 - yep it happened to me!!!

common

Hi
common problem for clutch to drop on a morning I have to lift with foot I have had my T2 since 2004 Then i add a leak near back wheel arch this is the reply below clutch has never dropped once since.

pipe to back is your clutch damper pipe some people blank it off as they tend to corode and once blanked suposed to give you a lighter clutch pedal.

Yours sounds much worse, But it is a common fault for the clutch to drop

Mines almost on the floor every morning, i just put up with lifting it back up now. If it aint broke, dont try to fix it! :lol

Back on this one I'm afriad

I am becoming aware of a whiring noise when the clutch is relesed in neutral.

As many of you of whom I have haunted you with of my tales of woe know :( ...............

I had my gearbox and entire clutch assembly preplaced for the hansome sum of £1,500 quid.

Am I to assume terrano gearboxes are a little noisy in neutral or is it a sign the recon gearbox is heading the same way as the old one :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Just thought I would update this thread. It was the Clutch fork that was the problem. I didnt attempt the job myself this time, i know my limits! Took it to a friends garage. When he got the gearbox out he found the clutch was already new so it seems someone has tried to fix the problem before but it was still an issue so they got rid of the car. Bloody thing behaved fine on the test drive and for a week after buying it before it failed. New clutch fork and another new clutch and it is sorted! The pedal now comes up to the top each time and no more funny noises. The clutch fork had been grinding against the pressure plate. Hopefully that is it sorted now. It towed a horsebox at the weekend fine so that was a good test!:thumb2

Clutch fork was what went on mine - but the gearbox was on its way out too  so had them both changed :(

My gearbox failed big time just before I drove the car to Spain just over two years ago - had it rebuilt, including the transfer box plus a new clutch. While me n er indoors are not in Spain my daughter uses it - just phoned me, "Car is in the garage, clutch is slipping, garage says it needs a new clutch" WHAT!!! That one has only done about 15,000 miles - goodbye 600 euros!!!
