So today I was sitting in traffic on/off on/off the clutch in 1st gear and then upon loosing the clutch up I felt a massive twang underfoot and the clutch felt all funny.

I pulled over and got in the foot well to find that the bracket that holds the pedal in situe with a nut through the floorpan had cracked around the edge and worked through;

I got home and popped to my pals who has an immense workshop in his garden and asked if he had any washers I could nick (silly question really) after giving me a selection of about 7 or 8 I got home and found the square one to be the best fit, 20 mins later and she was fixed again :thumb2

It looks as though the clearance hole in the bracket is much too big, or it was designed to have a washer there in the first place to allow adjustment.

This could have caused a nasty accident, leaving the vehicle in gear and driving forward, or reverse... Only way to stop the car would be to stall it!! or try pulling the gear lever to neutral, but to be fair if this happened to most of us, it would take a few seconds to stop it..

Moral of the story...
Check your nuts on a regular basis, :augieor in this case the bolt.
Grab a torch and have a look at yours..

Thanks for sharing this with us:thumb2

The oversized washer looks like it has solved the problem, but due to the flange, and the gap behind the bolt it might work loose a little.
Better would be a square / rectangular washer slightly smaller than the square / rectangular indent, so it clamps up with metal to metal contact.:thumb2

I never understood why Nissan didn't paint the metalwork behind the dash, all sorts of bracketry seen and not seen is very very slowly rusting away.

Tell me about it I'm glad I was in bumper to bumper traffic
I see what your saying about the washer and the flange, although it is quite secure so I'm not too worried now, it's solid.

I gave it a good kick and it seemed OK so I'm happy now

Just had a quick look at mine, the washer isn't much bigger than the bolt head, or is it a modified bolt...:nenau

Next time the socket set is out, I might fit a washer, there doesn't seem to be any distortion around the plate, but I guess it just goes...Mine has only lasted 18 years so far... here's to the next 18 years...:nenau

Is it easy to get a 1/2" drive socket to the bolt, or do you have to remove the spring?

Nightmare!!!!!! Don't bother with a socket and there is that much tension in those springs I wouldn't even bother trying to get it out

I just got on my back and used a 13mm open spanner, it was long work but did it in the end :thumb2
