Clunking sound when changing gear & accelerating

I've only noticed this properly today, when releasing the clutch after changing gear there is a clunk coming from underneath somewhere. It also makes the noise when accelerating or taking my foot off the accelerator.

I've also been losing clutch fluid, had to top up the reservoir a few times, I'm assuming this is a leaky slave cylinder, not had chance to look proper yet.

Could these issues be related and if any idea what the cause could be?

The cluncking noise sounds like an engine/gearbox mount knackered to me

Could be the flexi pipe leaking.
These can balloon out, split and leak.
You need to go under, take a look, have someone pressing the clutch pedal a few times.

Eliminate this problem first.

Then check UJs on prop shaft for play.

Clunking - Exhaust, engine and transmission mounts, rear anti roll bar links, of course the UJ's. or something loose in the car, try the jack too.

Clutch fluid - Slave or Master Cylinders, Flexi Hose, damper pipe that goes all the way to above the rear axle.

The fluid loss will not be related to the clunk, this I reckon is most likely the rear prop UJ's, or a foofed diff, both easy to check, and of course the link rods to the tube that goes across the chassis, forget their name, Rick

I'm 1000000000% convinced that I have a knackered diff as well as I have this issue along with my annoying rattle lol

also worth checking bushes on the rear suspension links.

It hasn't lost any clutch fluid recently, so I'm assuming a slow leak somewhere - for the time being I'm check the reservoir before I set off anywhere and keep a tub of clutch fluid in the car.

The clunking noise is coming from the prop shaft,, more specifically the UJ where it connects to the rear diff. I've taken a short video which I'm uploading to YouTube as I type.


What I'd like to know now is, how safe is it to drive? I was planning on going laning tomorrow in the north peaks, are the pins likely to shear and leave my driveless?

If it has got to the point of clunking, then at least one of the cups has lost its rollers, I would not drive it at all, Rick

Mark the flanges at each end and take it off, it needs sorting ASAP.:thumbs

If that is the gearbox end you could take up pole vaulting:naughty

You might get away with a new Hardy Spcer joint at the moment but if you leave it damage the yokes will occure and then a new prop shaft will be needed.

Not gearbox end, rear diff end. I'm wondering how much fun it would if been if it gave way at 80mph in the fast lane on the way home one night
