Hi

I have just brought a 1995 ford maverick. When you start driving it after a minute of so there is a clicking noise coming from nearside front wheel, I can get rid of it by putting into 4wd drive then back into 2wd drive does anyone know what it is and a way of stopping it without having to keep changing from 2wd to 4wd to 2wd.

Thanks

Carl

clicking noise

will most likley be your auto hub.if you look at willows never ending post(hello from norfolk and my 4x4 problems)she had a few problems with hers and all the info on them has been covered in detail.

Don't stick it in 4wd on hard surfaces 8O

does gravel pebbles count as hard or loose ? i generally use 2wd for that but if hopping between obstacles i use 4wd .... is that right ?

to be honest a little bit of 4x4 on the tarmac wont hurt (or shouldn't anyway) just dont do it much, or often, check out the auto hub claning article by shark1e in the downloads and if that doesn't work get some manual hubs! its a good choice and you wont regret it!

and dont forget to reverse a short distance when taking out of 4x4

Alot depends on the age of your T2 if it was made after 2000 you wont have the auto hub to worry about but if it's older then yes it's wise to back up 1m to dissconect the auto hubs as it'll increase you MPG as the front axle wont be turning

without knowing the year of your car it is hard to say and not conclusive enven then as later cars had a different set up but i'm sure someone else can answer this.

But on all auto hub cars you need to reverse at least one turn of the wheels each time yout dissengage 4x4, if not it ca still be in 4x4 despite what the dash light says as i beleive the light is just controled by a switch in the transfer box, but reversing unlocks the brake rings (also refered to a snap rings on this site at times) in the hubs

It is very common to have to do this on 4x4's so common in fact i drive more modern 4x4's with shift on the fly 4x4 daily but often find myself doing this out of habbit  and it pas to be on the safe side i suppose!

ok bud ive 1999 one.. lwb. 2.7 so will back it up now then

If you take it out of 4 wheel drive but dont reverse all that will happen will the hubs will still be locked and the drive shafts will rotate. 2 wheel drive but you may use more fuel. regards...bri

reversing

when i am out laning if its not a long drive between lanes i just take it out of 4wd until the next lane but if its a good few miles then i back it up a few metres or until i hear the click of the hubs disengaging.
