Chihuahua quest is it madness ?

We have been looking for another Chihuahua to replace one that died last year.
Only one we have managed to find that fits our requirements is in South Wales near Mountain Ash being of the right gender, colour, Pedigree Line etc.

So this afternooon looks like it is a trip of 165 miles each way to look at a dog!
Part of me thinks it is madness to travel so far as I know that the wife will know in about 20 seconds flat if it is "The One".
Fuel cost is going to be around £55.00!

I used to know a girl that had one, every time I went round the bloody thing was yapping, headbutting my ankles, chewing the laces on my CAT boots :doh

The young one can be yappy with strangers but neither of them are ankle biters.lol
The older one virtually never barks and is quite sociable.

We had a cat (well several in the past) last one lived for 26 years before we had her put down due to a growth on her head. If we had a cat now it would probably out live us both!

Long Coats

We have had two of each type so far and TBH I prefer long coat but when it is bath time the long coats take some time to dry with the wifes hairdyer.

It is a long coat female we are going to look at uness we both see sense at the last minute we plan to leave home at around 3.00 pm today.

Being a smaller dog they tend to live a bit longer than GSD's that we used to own when we were younger.
A friend of ours had 2 dogs from the same litter on died aged 8 the other managed 17 years !

Realistically 13-15 years is not unusual so this will be our last pup and I will be 80 when it is in old age !

I would happily drive 100+ miles to see a pup, if I were looking for one.

Just make sure you raise them as dogs, not as handbag fillers

When we were looking we had a breeder lined up in Sheffield area a good 2.5hr drive.
but then we went to look at a pup a little closer and he's the perfect lap dog:thumb2

New family member Miss Mitzy !!

Well 330 miles round trip left Derby at 2.35 pm viewed new doggy at 6.00 pm left Penrhiwceiber at 6.35 pm home for 9.10 pm.

It took about 15 seconds for Wendy to give me "the yes she is going to be ours" look !

She gets on well with the other two and is holding her own when the sniffing gets too much.lol

Ahh very cute fluffy little puppy. Trouble is all of those that I have seen have been dressed in cloths and tend to be nippy little sods.

Have to say I'm a Labrador person but it wouldn't do for us all to be the same.

We have had Labradors - Snoopy Mk1, GSD - Snoopy Mk 2, GSD- Harry, Belgian Shepherd crossed with Border Collie - George our last big dog. I would love to have another big dog but 4 stents and one heart attack have taught me to slow down!

Now it's wussy lap dogs but to my surprise after years of deriding small dogs I have come to really like them.

My brother who is ten years younger than me has always had GSD's and still has one when I visit him I feel he lives with a Giant Dog.lol

Can understand your reasoning for sure. I guess a lot of the nipping is learnt behaviour and can and should be trained out of them. Mind you that said doesn't matter what breed large or small if they're not treated correctly they'll all nip or bite.
Got to say if I let my daughter see your pup she'd be in love.

I know someone who has a German Shep and to me he's out of control. Tuesday I saw some sheps and although they're trained as sniffers and guarding they're extremely well trained and obedient. I doubt my labs would be so obedient although they're well trained. I find it a pleasure to see well trained obedient dogs.

Too late for me to say anything about your round trip, but we have picked up ebay items up from all around the UK, and to justify it, we have a look at what the area has to offer and tour the area, maybe stop overnight and make a long weekend of it. Often an area we have never been to before. If you look at the overal cost plus the ebay item, it makes it very expensive but if you look at it as a great weekend away and happened to pick up the ebay item, then you can justify it, in a funny sort of way lol.

Clearly you made the decision to go that day, so it worked out very well indeed.

Great that the pup was able to travel well in the car, not all pets do.

Last canine pal, was a working border collie, that was cleverer than me, a real treasure, and obedient to the last inch, incredible......so as Jim's T has said nearly all bad behaviour, is learnt, as is the good stuff, big or small, they need to know their place in the family/pack.....enjoy....:thumb2

Making a trip a short break !

I think you have a great puppy there.
There's something about having a pet that responds to you, and a dog is great, a cat makes it's own mind up, but there are a few that are lap cats.
I would still love a dog, when I was very young my parents bred alsatians, we had 13 at one time, I was quite rough with them, I even built a rickshaw for the bigger one to pull... but that project never got off the ground... but the rickshaw did lol..., then later on, my mother bred a few poodles, that were always within a yard of you, no matter what you were doing.
Our current lifestyle, wouldn't suit dog ownership. :nenau
