Many people believe that SWR only involves the antenna but that is an inaccurate assumption. When you place an SWR meter between the radio and the antenna it cannot decipher one component from another. A defective connector, bad coaxial cable, faulty or improperly installed stud mount or a defective and perhaps untuned antenna may all return the same results on the meter. Not only that, but how the antenna is mounted will also play a big part in the resulting SWR readings. For instance, on a ground-plane dependent mobile antenna, if the mount doesn't have a chassis ground the results could be higher than expected SWR. Just as well, if the antenna is mounted on the vehicle in a way that hampers its ability to radiate the applied energy into free space, you will experience less than optimum SWR
 
have wondered about something like this, guess still issues routing cable into car.

briggie would it be as good a ground plane as a mag on roof,

thinking with car in front would project signal forwards?

also wouldnt some of aerial be below the roof line which would hamper
signal, perhaps this contradicts my first thought.

suspect cant beat a mag, vandal proof. even on roof with low trees
if have a stinger that gives at wrost mag will give way and be more
foregiving than a fixed mount.

i have no experience in that particular mount , but where you mount the antenna will affect its radiated power , a direct mount ie . fixed to the roof would be a good ground plane , but like i said i have no experience of this particular mount , all i suggest is you mount it as directed and check swr...id guess it would be slightly directional too , but thats a guess

but to be honest i only use it for laning and response work and normally that is in close quarters

you can route the coax through the wiring in the boot door i would guess so would make it a bit neater

i have heard that front mounted ones and roof mounted ones will give a better signal distance

but if you use the boot mount would it not have the roof and boot to bounce the signal off
 
one needs to think about reception too , a springer on a mag mount is a good option for green laning , but forgive me for saying this again .... even on " pre tuned " antennas ..... check the swr as its dependant on position and fitting .
 
It will be slightly directional but with mounting antennas it's also worth looking at how easy it is to mount. I was tempted at one of those mounts but I can see running coax to be a problem.

There will always be compromise. I wouldn't worry too much.
 
i know mine is pre tuned but is their any point in going any deeper into this swr etc for what i use it for ?
 
i always check my swr every time i switch on my radio , but thats just me , you should be ok with a pre tuned antenna , but if you get the chance check it anyway
