hi all,
can someone fill me in before i go mental.

if youd read my previous post, i had a belt noise that didnt change.

took it into the garage before ordering waterpump parts ect and they said just the belt....

.......so all they did was replace the 2 belts.....ok fine great.

picked it up, drove it hope - all of half a mile - and now i can hear " tappa ta tappata tappata" quite clearly and loudly and which goes much faster the more i rev it!

swear it wasnt there when i took it in, and i know for a fact the belt noise didnt hide it.

does anyone know how or why its its appeared having the belts done? im not an expert, but i usualy associate that sort of noinse with the tappets gone and no oil......but appearing bam!???

any advice would be welcomed as atm i feel like going kaboom myself at gargage

Can u record it on your phone and upload to YouTube ?

Could be anything, loose heat shield, loose bolt on pulley, tappets, cam worn, water pump, alternator, power steering pump, or a major engine fault

Probably something very simple tho

wouldn't be surprised if its the viscous fan, I bet its loose or something. The speed of the viscous will increase, when cold, as you accelerate and should fade away after a very short while.

just a thought, but an easy check, and of course, your belts go around the same pulleys...

i really hope its something that simple, and would explain how suddenly appeared, but does sound like coming from engine.
as soon as upload complete will post link

yup, im very suspicious. you see, they have to loosen the alternator and belt tensioner both sides of engine, and remove the belt OVER the viscous fan to remove it....you can see where im going with this.....so it could be damage there, or the belts are now so tight, its broken the pump or something similar...! might even just be a broken fin on the viscous...

If it's chatter chatter chatter like a mechanical noise, pour a cup full of water over the belts as they are running, mine does this and it was only the belts.

So could be an easy fix, and knowing what is causing it will help.

Try one belt at a time.

Stand back:doh....

best regards,
Rustic

samsung galaxy....shows im getting old when cant understand phone!

in 20 or so mins when its uploads..."yawn" hopefully youl have a better idea than me.
dosnt sound like the fan to me, hope it is in some way as better than engine but if they have broke something they wont own up and pay for it!

Does the noise get less as the engine warms up? Just wondering if you're hearing normal diesel knock on cold start up , a bit like a choke . The engine timing is different on cold start and more fuel in the system.

i dont think it woule be dielil knock, and would be seriously worried if it was...as its a 2.4 petrol!

Ah didn't spot that :lol:doh
Timing chain then  tensioner .
Solarman is your resident petrol 'spert :clap

ohhhh its petrol!!

sounds like tappets to me!

check your oil first...

thats what i thought.
have checked oil, its down but half full....would say fair enough, but before went into the arage, the only noise was from belt...i dont understand how all of a sudden that can appear from having y belts done??

Ok that's a tappet.

Unsure if they are adjustable or hydraulic

It's quite loud tho. Have u checked oil level ?

Could be camshaft wear tho...

I'd change the oil first. Try holding it at 3000 rpm for a few mins it might just be a hydraulic adjuster not quite full of oil or full of sludge
