My 3.0 litre terrano has now done 134k and i am getting paranoid that its rattling more than normal, what mileage would you think the cam chain should be replaced or tappetts adjusted please. As it has shims it will be a main dealer job which no doubt will be expensive. Also having just spent £1260 on gearbox i dont want another huge bill. It does quieten down when warmed up. Oil/filter has been changed every 9k.

Just got a quote from My local Nissan Stealer, to just change the cam chain £1365.29 !! and to check the valve clearances £259.20 and any shims charged extra !! I think it dosen't rattle that bad now. They did say that they only tend to replace the chains if they have snapped otherwise they last if serviced regularly.

Consider putting some Molyslip 2000E in with the engine oil.

cant see a chain needing changing, providing is getting lubed,

should be almost as reliable as gear driven, even if noisier, just,
than a belt.
