Hi and happy new year to all,

I've been having loads of fun with my Terrano in the snow lately, but have on a couple of occasions noticed a slight burning smell coming into the cabin when in 4WD (H). This was particularly noticeable today when the underside was plastered with snow and slush and goes away in 2WD.

I'm wondering if this is just the smell of the slush on the hot diff casing, joints etc. or if I should be worried!

I'll check the diff oil this weekend, haven't noticed any leaks.

Any advice welcome,

cheers, Scott

4wd burning smell

I've been having loads of fun with my Terrano in the snow lately, but have on a couple of occasions noticed a slight burning smell coming into the cabin when in 4WD (H).

I've had this happen ever since the vehicle was new, smeels a bit like burning rubber, it's always happened for the first hour or so in 4wd and then goes away.

Had it yesterday when I was out in the snow with the chains on, it went away again after about 10 minutes.

Doesn't seem to be any problem to mine.

Thanks for the reply Roger, glad to hear its not just mine.

O yes

The smell you are getting could be that young child on his sledge wedged under you truck, :doh It will be his coat burning on the cat or the gear box. Go off road for a bit. That will soon spit them out :lol

I'm glad I read this thread before I noticed a similar smell, it does smell like rubber, at first I thought it was the rear tyres, brake hubs are cool, bearings ok, rear tyres same tread depth etc.. any how I have never noticed it before in all the 14 years, however, I have used 4x4 more this last month than ever before, and also leaving the front hubs engaged more often. So the transfer box was working harder than normal.
The smell is only noticable after I park it in the garage, and I get a whiff near to the rear tyres!!
Could of course be road dirt which consists mostly of worn rubber and dried salt and what ever..

So any ideas what the smell is? :nenau
Best regards, Richard

a long shot but worth a thought!

4wd puts much more strain on the clutch especialy when tunring full lock at slow speeds and reversing, could it be a bit of clutch smell?

It's not neccesariily a bad thing, I get it sometimes on one of our 4x4's (non nissan) when reversing heavy triler in awkeard of road places and it has only done 18k miles, just one of them things.
