ok, so ive had this smell before, so im not being paranoid!!!

on my way home from Jims last night, the route i took included a long, steep curved dual carriagway (Ainly top-Brighouse Road), and I noted I was doing 60 (to my surprise) and i also noted the smell of burning rubber. Slow down, and it went away, and doesnt ever smell during normal driving,

me and heidi have noticed it i think twice before, certainly once before in the same place, same scanerio...

car appears to be driving just fine, but what could that be????

tyre scrub ? ...... belt slipping ?

Maybe a bonfire..... if same plac, eh briggie

im sure its the car....good point about the belts...ill check

more ideas???

cos its odd it only seems to be present at high speed/under load....

i was going to drive down to Nottingham tomorrow in it, now im not because i dont trust it lol

If your rear tyres are not the same type, tread depth pressure, etc then if the oil in the rear LSD diff is old then the wheels will fight each other, causing tyre scrubbing. Check all tyres and look for fresh scrubbing.
(I will assume you are not in 4 wheel drive.)

I some times pick up clutch/ brake burning smells in the wife's car.
I accelerate and pass a few cars and the smell goes.

Moral: It may not be you.

If you drive past Burton on Trent you smell marmite, or hops.
Burton Latimer on the A14 :- Weetabix

The worst is when you pass land fill sites, there are a couple on the M40, we only notice them on the return north.

ill check the tyres, but i looked the other day and they are still like new but the point about oil is a good one as the car NEEDS a full service, so could well be that i wonder?? it was a rubber smell though, not oil...!!

in a emergency apply briggie logic ..

symptom...... smell of burning rubber

suggested checks ......

is car on fire ?....... no ? ... read below

think of what things on the car are rubber

the pipes are fuel pipes by the looks of them they have been replaced and the person didnt bother to remove the old ones i have the same in my car

cheers Carl, actually, that makes sense because the fuel pipes ARE new underneath! I figured it was nothing to worry about, but as it was rubber i thought id ask!!

i just checked the tyres again, all ok, checked the rear exhaust mount, all ok, will check the rest tonight...

i think the ic hoses always look 'bulgy' because they ares so short and clamped at each end, mine look like that anyway. It looks like yours has had the clips replaced as well as the originals can be prone to leaks, has the other side been done?

yup, certainly has! good, thats another box i can tick!

When I used to tow van I got a hot gear oil smell. Discovered there is another gear lever boot below the main one that you see from inside. Just where the levers go through the body work there is a smaller one and these are prone to dopping to bits which is where you get hot smells coming up from underneath.

Jim

Mine smells different when I go over 60, the heater chucks out more heat and things warm up, could be something as simple as your floor mats, if you have them, or your carpet getting warm

errrr....huh?

i shall investigate....!

Angle your truck at about 40 degrees with the front end pointing up.!
Place a brick on the accelerator until 60mph is reached.!
Then get ya nose into action & find the smell.!
Or...
What until you start to see smoke.!
Thats about as much help & advise that i can give...

On a more helpful note :augie

1. I don't think I'd worry about it ( but would bug the hell out of me )

2. Defiantly focus more on the interior & it may not be rubber, just smell like it...

If your heater is on when you notice it, you may want to drain your water & refill if it hasn't been done for a while, does go stagnant...

cheers ADZ, you could be on to something anyway, as I am over due a full service-and that would mean draining the coolant...the heater was on too, so i think ill experiment some more this week. I have to go to Leeds on Friday night, and possibly Stckport tomorrow night, so will have a "smell" then...!

I had that smell in mine earlier on in the year

Drained the water & refilled with anti-freeze only & the smell went :D

Apart from when i go swimming then i get a wierd poo smell :nenau :augie :lol
